Miguel Cotto announced on his website that he will no longer work with Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward. Pedro Luis Diaz of Cuba replaced Steward. Diaz will be the head trainer for Cotto’s rematch against Antonio Margarito on Dec. 3 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Cotto was trained for most of his career by his uncle, Evangelista Cotto but after a huge argument assistant trainer Joe Santiago took over, but that didn’t last after Cotto was knocked out by Manny Pacquiao in 2009. Cotto hired Stetward.

“I want to take this opportunity to express my wholehearted gratitude to Emanuel Steward, who I consider a friend and mentor,” Cotto said in his statement. “Because of calendar conflicts and other matters, we were unable to work together for this next fight. He is one of the best trainers I have ever met in boxing and I will be forever appreciative for the two fights we worked together. We have both kept the doors open to maybe join forces in the future if the circumstances and timing are adequate.

“Now I will focus on my training camp. I feel happy and thrilled as ever to commence preparing for December. I will be ready and will win the fight for all of (my fans).”

But there is more to the story which Cotto is not telling.

“It’s kind of surprising. Everything had been in place for me to train him,” Steward told ESPN.com. “Miguel wanted to start training already and wanted me there for longer than our unusual five or six weeks together.”

Steward said he had planned to go to Cotto’s Orlando, Fla., training camp this weekend and that Top Rank, Cotto’s promoter, had already purchased his airline ticket.

Steward said he was surprised by the switch because he had already agreed to train Cotto for the fight and had received a contract from Cotto’s attorney, Gabriel Peñagaricano. But according to Top Rank Emanuel Steward was demanding too much money.

What ever the case will be, Cotto fuck*ed up by switching trainers, one of the best at that, considering Cotto will be seeking his avenge to his11th-round knockout loss to Margarito.

What’s your opinion?

  1. Oh ooh this is not good, this looks like another chance for Cottos corner to let him down. I dont know how much Emanuel was asking but what ever it was I’d pay it considering how important this fight is for Miguel. Dont get me wrong I still think Cotto can win but will his cornner be there when he needs them most. I think the biggest problem in Cottos career has been his cornner, they let him down in his biggest fights and this isnt going to help that problem. Cotto screwed up, I’m not sure I know who this trainer is but I hope he knows what he’s doing. Then again Margarito is no wiz in the ring, it doesnt take a genious to beat him lol. Cottos still getting his, no worries papa go beat that ass. Cotto looks more determind than ever. Margarito is going to have to bring a baseball bat with him this time lmao.
