Antonio Margarito’s Reapplication

Antonio Margarito has reapplied for a boxing license. He has applied for a license in Nevada with hopes of landing a big fight with Manny Pacquaio or Miguel Cotto.

Margarito lost his license after an illegal plaster like substance was found in his wraps prior to his knockout loss to “Sugar” Shane Mosley. Since then, he has parted ways with his trainer and fought once in Mexico. He is looking for a big fight in the United States.

Antonio Margarito should no longer be allowed to fight. The commission will review his application and bring him in later for questioning. If the commission sincerely believes that Margarito had no clue about the illegality of the wraps, then I will support a decision to relicense him. I would like Margarito to apologize for the actions that occurred, regardless if he knew about them or not.

Margarito has not owned up for the wraps, blaming them solely on his former trainer, Javier Capetillo. He has not apologized because he did not know and feels that he did nothing wrong.

Until Margarito changes that stance, I hope he does not make another dollar in boxing. How many fighters fought Margarito and were unknowingly hit with casts? If Brother Naazim Richardson did not ask for Margarito’s wraps to be checked, what would the outcome of that fight looked like? How many more fighters would’ve fought Margarito before he was caught? What if someone died?

Boxing is a dangerous sport. It is a calculated risk. Boxers enter into a fight against an opponent in which they approved with a predetermined maximum weight and amount of rounds and the same or similarly approved gloves. All fighters step through the ropes on an even playing field, all hoping for wins that will lead them to big fights and big money. An unfair advantage such as performance enhancing drugs elevates the performance level of the user. An illegally wrapped hand not only enhances the power of the user but diminishes the performance of the opponent with every blow. These diminishing blows can cause a fighter to lose a fight, become permanently damaged, or even die.

Even if Margarito did not know that his hands were weapons, he should understand that he unfairly had an advantage over his opponent. For that, he should now apologize. If a boxer cannot apologize for a wrongdoing, even if they did not know they were wrong at the time, then that person should no longer be allowed to box.

I guess we will wait and see what the commission thinks and whether or not we will see Margarito fight in the United States again.

  1. Jay,
I’m not surprised that is all you WOULD remember. I can’t help that. Anyway, whatever happens, happens, so be it. I think it is fair to say that a decision needs to be made right away. Why all the suspense ??

Why not make a bare nuckle rematch ?? Oh wait, they might say Margarito has terminator type hands and arms under the skin now. Forget it. We will definetly never hear the end of it.

For the record, I think the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry is the best and has been the best of at least the past 30 years.

  2. Hey jesus correct me if im wrong but I dont remember any illegal substances falling out trinidads gloves. All I remember was something about his nuckle pads being to thick. Thats just gauze not a “plaster like substance”.The low blows to judah were not daliberate everyone knows that, and judah had all the time in the world to recoupe.

  3. What if this? What if that ? What if ? What if ? What if ???
None of the what ifs happened. Don’t create made believe scenarios ??? Just because Margarito beat the shit out of Cotto doesn’t prove any cheating. For all the facts that have been thrown up in the air, no one has a logical explanation for Margarito being able to take the punches he took on the chin for twelve rounds. NOT ONE PERSON. Cotto took it to Margarito and hit him with punches that would have knocked out a train. He hit Mosley with them too. He actually wobbled Mosely once ot twice but he kept going. Explain that to me someone please !! What about all the fighters that Cotto beat. Is it fair to say he had an unfair advantage ? ABSOLUTELY NOT !! Well the repeated low blows to Zab Judah did give Cotto an advantage.

In that case, everybody turned a blind eye over the Felix Trinidad incident. Nothing was ever done about it. No investigation, nothing. He kept fighting and had a great career. I was a real fan of Felix Trinidad. He was the only reason to watch the undercards on a Mike Tyson main event.

Anyway, if you want to justify losses go ahead. Just don’t throw anyone under the bus.

Another thing, I think it’s unfair to delay a decision on the license. If their gonna say ‘no’, say it now. It’s been 17 months already. It might as well have been a 2 year suspension.

  4. grow up sun you have a lot to learn. Why dont you lick their boots while your at it. what do you want to do start wwIII over a boxing match lol. calm down bro I understand you like your fighter and all that sh-t but at the end of the day its just boxing. Dont be mad at me LOL because your boys a cheat. If he was any other fighter he would get the same treatment. Remember hes just a man lol.People understand that maybe he made a mistake that one time, But that mistake could have taken someones life!! kid. It dosent matter what country your from, A true fan understands that its about the science and the few, talented ones that know how to use it. I love our sport of boxing, But no boxing match is worth a mans life. Wrap your pride around that and not someones casket. Remember that could be your boxer in there getting brain damage or killed. What if he killed mosely, Where would your pride be then. If margarito knew about the wraps then he should admit to it and ask for mercy. If he didnt know{which I find hard to believe} then I say leave him alone, God Bless him and good luck. SWEET SCIENCE thats what its about. Hey all you real boxing fans, let me know when it stops being about the science and ill stop watching. I Luv boxing but I value the lives that make the sport great more. God Bless them and God Bless you all.

This a side from being about pride its about a guy that reps a nation if u dont believe me go talk shit about pacquiao in front of flips and u’ll get my point but anyway, these boxers are not just boxers, they rep a nation most of the time specially with mexican fighters… and i get tired if repeating myself but where was all the rucus about mosleys steroid use and or trinidads wrappings? Now comes this mexican kicking puerto ricos ass which 90% of fans were cottos fans and wow… Ban this guy for life!!! This is about nationality and specially here in the u.s where most people think this country is the maximum authority!!!

  6. what up, guys
mexican mafia you sound more like your afraid other mexicans or mexican fighters reps. will be tainted. Noone is generalizing here we’re talking about margarito not mexico. I understand how you must feel but dont let your pride mislead you, Pride is a killer sin dont let it get the best of you.
Jesus I respect your opinion buddy but just because he didnt get caught before dosent mean he didnt do it. the fact that he didnt get to use the wraps isnt a good defence. Here is a what if for you, what if he did use them and something bad happend to mosely. what if he got caught after the fact. how would you feel then? If didnt get caught he would have used them, remember his hands were already wrapped. That means he was willing to fight with whatever was on his hands at the time. all b/s aside, let there be no question about it (the most important things in that ring are not wins and losses its the lives and safety of the fighters we love to watch.

  7. POSITIVE PROOVE ===== SUSPENSION (OR DID HE GET SUSPENDED FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE PLASTER INCIDENT?????)

  8. hey jesus are you for real?? he didnt step in the ring with the plaster because he was caught. that is the only reason why mosley didnt get hurt. i like this article and i agree with ez e. mr. mexicomafia your to much of a margacheto fan to see the obviouse. i guarantee if mosley was the one who got caught or cotto gave that whoopin to margacheto with loaded gloves we wouldnt be hearing (GIVE THEM THERE LISCENSE OR JUST SAY SORRY) he cheated he got caught and i know later on when people do forget about this it will be like the resto documentary. but this time it will be margacheto saying sorry while crying cause he is not allowed to fight anymore. i dont care what anybody says i know he used it against cotto and he would of used it against mosley if he didnt get caught. like i said im a boxing fan i like the mexico boricua rivalry it makes it fun. but margacheto is a bum and so is resto.

  9. I agree to some extent of the comments being written so far…

I think he does need to apologize. There is a difference between an apology and an admision of guilt. Besides, he has served his suspension.

We have to focus on what really happened. Edgar, you bring up two “what ifs”, and that’s fine. Fact is those “what ifs” didn’t happen. He didn’t kill Mosely and Mosely is not your son or mine. No plaster was used in the Mosely fight. So in some ways you have to conclude that Margarito has not used the plaster. We can assume he did and justify losses for his previous opponents, but there is no proof positive. The burden of proof is on the critics and the Margarito haters. To say he used it before is implying that the boxing commisions are a bunch of idiots many times over for not catching it. You might as well say that they were all paid off in a big conspiracy to make Margarito a big superstar. Doesn’t quite add up, does it ??

Don’t get me wrong though, plaster and boxing don’t mix. I’m glad he didn’t get into the ring with Mosely wit the the loaded gloves.

  10. I think Rob brings some good points.

Every story has two points of views the bad and the good. What if Margarito continue to fight Mosley with loaded gloves and he killed Mosley. How would you feel if Mosley was your son?

The sport is already dangerous and we don’t need anyone trying to make it worse.

Yes, Margarito did serve his time and I too think he should apologize; his manager was part of Margarito’s team so he has to apologize for his actions.

Some times you have to swallow your pride. Apologizing is not going to hurt anyone.

I am a huge fan of Margarito and I want to see him back in the ring and if all it takes is a simple apology to get his licenses back so be it.

  11. @Rob rutz
I understand you are trying to put the other side of the story but to make margarito to ask for forgiveness is to degrade the image of the mexican people as beggers!. And that i am against! He served his time and he doesnt have to ask for forgiveness to anybody. And excuse me to say this Rob Rutz, but you are full of shit!

  12. Will Nevada over-ride nthe CSAC and license Margo. Now, I can understand the author’s stance on the lack of remorse on Margo’s part. ANYBODY that has ever “laced ’em up” knows when there something “unusual” going on during wrapping and gloving. That was the main reason NO fighters, Mexican (like Barrera) or non-Mexican, were anxious to side with Margo during this ordeal. Trainers like Stewart, McGirt, Atlas… also went on record stating that they seroiusly doubted that Margo had no knowledge. I’ve wrapped fighters on ALL levels hundreds of times and I too found it very hard to believe. But.. I’m not here to cruxify Margo neither and my opinion has no bearing on how the commissions will finally decide.

Will they conclude that Margo has been punished enough?? Or will the possibility of a mega fight tilt the balance in Margo’s favor?? Either way.. I believe the ultimate decision will have it’s share of critics, whichever way they eventually decide.

I go back to my question.. Will Nevada over-ride the CSAC and license Margo?? Will they show the CSAC some respect and seek their opinion/permiission??
