For the rematch between Felix “Tito” Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins to happen, the promoter Don King would have to put a $15 million for the Puerto Rican ex world champion.

Felix Trinidad Sr., father, manager and trainer of the pride of Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico, confirmed that his son made that amount in his bout against Roy Jones Jr. and for him to come back against Hopkins, the amount “would have to be around that sum.”

“Tito’s worth is around that amount and this fight against Hopkins is even bigger than the ones against Roy Jones because this is the rematch that people have been waiting for and the one that the fans, especially Puerto Rican fans, will support,” Trinidad Sr. stated.

Trinidad Sr. stated that in the meeting he held with the Don King last Wednesday, they did not speak about money since “he knows how much Tito is worth and its around that number.”

“When Tito came back to fight Mayorga (October 2004) we signed a contract with Don King that Tito was going to make at least $10 Million even if he was going to fight against the neighbor’s son,” he said.

In his bout with Jones, Tito was defeated by unanimous decision which was only his third loss against 42 wins with 35 of them by knockout and world titles at 147, 154 and 160 lbs but despite this most recent loss, Trinidad Sr. feels that his son’s worth is still intact.

“No promoter is giving away money. They know that Tito is one of the biggest draws for PPV. Tito lost against Roy Jones but it wasn’t a beating, it was a close fight. Tito is till the same. I am not going beyond what Tito deserves, I am not killing the negotiations but this business generats so much money that it is fair that all parties benefit from it,” Trinidad Sr. expressed who said that he preferred a flat rate and not an agreement where Trinidad would receive a percentage of the PPV.

The Trinidad-Jones bout generated more than half a million PPV buys and

$25 Million in television sales alone.

Hopkins, 44, shocked the world when he defeated Trinidad for the Puerto Rican’s first loss. Last October he did it again to Kelly Pavlik as he became the first man to defeat the current middleweight champion.

“If Hopkins would of lost against Pavlik, a fight against Tito would have been interesting but now that Hopkins beat Pavlik, Bernard proved that he is not finished. If there is a fight that I want Tito to make happen, its this one,” he concluded.
