PPV or not to PPV

Here we go again.  Saturday features another weekend of HBO vs. Showtime.  The HBO offering has Juan Manuel Marquez (48-4-1, 35 KOs) against Joel Cassamayor (36-3-1, 35 KOs).  The Showtime card has the main event of Nate Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) fighting Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs).  The HBO card is Pay Per View and Showtime is on its network.  I am curious, which card will boxing fans watch?  Will you watch one, both or neither?  For those that have Showtime, the choice may be easy.  My thought here is that we are conditioned to buy PPV fights because we think that the card will be full of good fights.  For example, in addition to the main event, HBO will feature the rematch of Sergio Mora and Vernon Forrest but is the rest of the card PPV worthy?  I feel like we have been fooled into ordering every PPV and not even caring about the undercard anymore.  It did not used to be this way in the past so why do we tolerate it now?  Marquez is a big favorite in the fight and the undercard is not even moderately interesting to casual fight fans.  I guess you can tell, as much as I am interested in the main event I will be passing on HBO this weekend and watching the excellent Showtime card.  You can probably watch the main event on HBO at a later date anyway.  What is this audience going to watch?

  1. Im watching both! DVR ing one … and watching the other.. Watching it with friends so everyone drops $5 for the PPV card.

  2. I’m going to watch both fights, but I’m not paying for the PPV one anyways, TV azteca in Mexico will air it delayed for free, so I’ll watch the showtime first and then tune in to the TV azteca, I would not pay top watch that boring PPV card,.
