Victor Ortiz gone too long for a title fight

110916.02As he finished up filiming for the big screen in Expendables 3, Victor Ortiz was being scheduled for a junior middleweight title bout against 154 pound IBF champion Carlos Molina on December 14th, for the undercard of Golden Boy’s Broner vs. Maidana. By the time that card rolls around, Ortiz would have been out of the ring approximately 18 months since his loss to Josesito Lopez in June 2012, when he suffered a broken jaw.

For now, Ortiz will have to fight another top contender and win before being able to fight for the IBF title or any other title. The likely direction for Golden Boy had Ortiz been sanctioned to fight Molina, assuming a victory, would have been a 2014 matchup against Canelo Alvarez. Unfortunately, Golden Boy will need a plan B for Molina and Ortiz come December. Another possible opponent could have been Austin Trout; however, he is fighting Erislandy Lara on December 7th for the WBA junior middleweight title on Showtime.

The Maidana vs. Broner card was shaping up to be a great PPV event; unfortunately, with this hiccup, Golden Boy will need to come up with something interesting given Keith Thurman vs. Jesus Soto Karass is not worthy of a main undercard for a PPV event.

That said, there continues to be something preventing Victor Ortiz from returning to the big stage in the ring. I would not be surprised if he finds himself in some other lane of entertainment before he gets back.

  1. Idk about Ortiz anymore, I think he has great talent but just not the mental ability to actually be great. I’m pretty sure his title fight is cancelled and now is fighting more of a tune-up opponent. I was pretty sure it would have been a mistake to throw him in there with a guy like Molina off the bat. I would have picked Molina to get the win.
