Miguel Cotto announced on Twitter on Saturday that he would be coming back in October with Freddie Roach as his trainer. He has also been talking with Top Rank Promotions again, so any thoughts Cotto would fight on the undercard of the Mayweather-Alvarez showdown in September has now been wiped out. Top Rank and Cotto are planning an October 5th bout on HBO with 33 year old journeyman Delvin Rodriguez. Who cares, right? Had he he stayed working with Golden boy Promotions, there were plenty of match-ups they could have paired for him in that venue.
That said, a lot of fights have subsequently been mentioned for the under card of the September 14th card in Las Vegas; most notably Matthysse vs Garcia. Although that fight would make the Mayweather-Alvarez fight the best PPV card in boxing history, I can’t imagine Golden boy would waste a stand alone main event fight as an undercard.
Other fighters who have been mentioned by fans and press are Josesito Lopez, Robert Guerrero, and even Victor Ortiz. Personally, I would not mind seeing any of these guys in any combination paired up on the under card. The most popular and most dramatic would be a rematch with Lopez and Ortiz, given Ortiz has not fought since Lopez broke his jaw in their bout just over a year ago. It would be a chance for Ortiz to prove he overlooked Lopez the first time, or Lopez could prove it was no fluke and that the highly criticized Oritz needs to find other ventures. My prediction would be that Ortiz wins by stoppage in a rematch.
Too bad Cotto did not stay with Goldenboy for another fight. We could have seen him with any of the aforementioned fighters in September. Who do the fans want to see?
I have always loved to watch Cotto box. I totally agree with you,I also watched him as his training begin to slide,and the more he got hit, the more he became a fighter with a caution approach. Not the Cotto I saw many times in madison square garden, stand toe to toe with the best in the world and walk away the winner. If Roach can bring him back to the fighter he was in the middle of his career he will once again,be unstoppable.
Roach can get a fighter to preform at peak levels as with the pac man, pacman seeks a career in music ,pac man starts losing, Cotto starts a music career? Go figure.
Cotto has always been one of my favorite fighters. His performance against Trout was a disappointing one. I was looking forward to seeing a big comeback from him against another prize fighter…Once again, disappointed…
