Amateur Boxing Event in Pomona

The “Chatter Box” is spreading the word that female boxing champ Trina Ortegon will be a special guest at the upcoming amateur boxing show presented by Sugar Shane Mosley’s Pomona Boxing Club. The charity bash is in association with the Diamond’s Love Foundation and will be taking place THIS Sunday, June 16 on Father’s Day. Here’s an exclusive sneak peek at what’s goin’ down this weekend!

Sunday will be a memorable day as father-son and father-daughter teams join together in and out of pix1the ring at this USA Boxing-sanctioned show on Father’s Day. Fittingly enough, the three generations of Team Mosley will also be present including trainer Jack Mosley, World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Shane Mosley and and amateur star Shane Mosley Jr. Trina Ortegon, Abner Mares, Xavier “The Mongoose” Montelongo Jr., Bobby “Schoolboy” Chacon, and more have been invited as the celebrity guests of honor.

The outdoor event benefiting the nonprofit Diamond’s Love Foundation will be held at the Mosley Manor in Pomona, Calif. There will be live entertainment, kids’ activities and other surprise guests in attendance including SoCal’s Ortegon.

Nicknamed the “Iron Butterfly,” Trina is a IFBA and IBA Champion and a WIBA title challenger who was featured in the best-selling book “Extraordinary Women of the Ring” by ringside photographer Mary Ann Lurie Owen. She is a native of New Mexico who now makes the Inland Empire her home.

After retiring from the ring, she was also a boxing commissioner and is an ABC-certified professional boxing referee. “I was inspired and encouraged by Joe Cortez, Russell Mora, Jay Nady, Kenny Bayless, and Tony Weeks,” Trina says. “Not a bad group of people to have in your corner! They’ve all been very encouraging and it’s the going the natural transition for me from fighter.”

She has also helped out local boxing clubs in her area and continues to stay connected to the sweet science.

“Though I love working with fighters, I like the bigger picture,” the tall brunette tells me. “A referee and/or commissioner that has fought the fight and tasted glory can carry knowledge that most will never understand, in my opinion.”

Ortegon’s passion for the squared ring remains strong and she gives props to those who helped paved the way.

“Those officials that inspired me are tops and if they have faith in me then what’s to stop me?” Trina adds, “and my coach Irene Garcia was always my #1 inspiration!”

The former fighter enjoys supporting the young amateurs, both boys and girls who step into the ring.

“I’m looking forward to meeting all the future champs!” she notes.

Besides the Mosley Pomona Boxing Club, there will be several area clubs participating in the show. The pre-matches drew a huge amount of interest and spectators can look forward to seeing some of the best young guns in the ring.

Barstow’s Andrew Angelcor has been training hard for this day. “I hope to see everyone there,” he says. “Come support me and my team put it down for Barstow on June 16th in Pomona!”

Event organizers including Cerena Mosley, Shante Hall, Rose Garrett and the whole team are expecting a large turnout for this Father’s Day edition of their series of live fights that have featured both amateur and pro cards. They first began promoting shows last year.

And Team “Sugar” Shane have been celebrating his win last month over Pablo Cesar Cano. The Pomona boxing hero won a unanimous decision for the vacant WBC International Welterweight title in Cancun on May 18. There’s talk of another return later this fall.

“The legacy of three generations of the Mosley family will be in the ring,” Shante Hall confirmed as we caught up today. “It’s gonna be a great day for all. We have a 10-year-old girl fighting that everyone’s looking forward to watching!”

LIttle Jesikah Guerra from Chino Hills will be lacing up and showing that the girls in amateur boxing are continuing their upswing.

And one of women’s boxing’s pioneers, Trina Ortegon, will be ringside cheering the female combatants on. The “Iron Butterfly” proves to be a role model both in and out of boxing.

You can meet Trina, the Mosley family and all the other champs this weekend!
