Showing no ill effects from a one-year layoff, boxing superstar Floyd “Money” Mayweather didn’t skip a beat in his return to the ring, retaining his WBC Welterweight World Championship and capturing the vacant Ring Magazine Welterweight World Championshp with a dominant 12-round unanimous decision win over Six-Time and Four-Division World Championship Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

At age 36, the universally regarded No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world employed his superb defensive skills and a powerful right hand to effectively dominate the 30-year-old Guerrero. In his first fight since a May 5, 2012 triumph over Miguel Cotto, Mayweather scored the unanimous decision by the score of 117-111 three times.

Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s), of Grand Rapids, Mich., landed 60 percent of his power shots to Guerrero’s 28 percent and used his signature lateral movement in a 12-round master performance during which the challenger only managed to land 19 percent of his total punches thrown.

“The less you get hit in this sport, the longer you last,” Mayweather said. “I needed my father (trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.) this night and we were victorious. The less you get hit, the longer you last. Continue to box. If the knockout came, I was going to take it.

“Everyone was saying that at the age of 36, I didn’t have it no more. My defense wasn’

t sharp after the Cotto fight, but I have proved myself. Cotto is a future Hall of Famer. I’ve been in with some of the best. All I want to do is give the fans exciting fights.”

Mayweather leaned mostly on his speedy right hand throughout the fight, a weapon that the southpaw Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s), of Gilroy, Calif., couldn’t seem to see or react to. After the fight, Mayweather, who opened up a cut over his opponent’s eye in the 8th round, claimed that he hurt his most effective weapon midway through the fight.

“He was barely slipping by the punches,” Guerrero lamented. “I landed some good punches. He’s a great fighter. He’s slick, he’s quick. He came out and did his thing. He was a little better than I thought. I thought I was going to catch him. He was on his game tonight.”

  1. E1Kora, the point is that Mayweather has been fighting BIG name fighters after they come out of BIG wins! So it’s not like he is waiting to pick and choose on EASY fights. He chose Cotto after he looked GREAT on his victory against Margarito, he didn’t fight Margarito but good for him, who knows what that trash of fighter would have done to win (CHEAT AGAIN!). When he came out of retirement he didn’t go looking for an easy warm up fight. He went straight for the other BEST fighter in the sport , MARQUEZ! Anyway, I do like Canelo. He is the future of the sport. But to put him in the ring with Mayweather would hurt his undefeated rating and that would not be fair for the kid. And no, I don’t even think it would be a close fight. Mayweather will outbox him with his defense and speed. I would definitely pay to see the fight but the end of it would not be a surprise. But hey, I’ve seen some weird stuff happen in the ring…

  2. I never thought I would live long enough to see what has become of boxing. I have been watching and following boxing since my dad took me to my first real boxing match. I got to see sugar ray robinson , wow what a camp. I got to watch leonard vs duran, first time around. I watched mancini hit kim with a punch that i knew had killed the poor korean. I got to catch salvador sanchez, one of the best lightweights I had ever seen, I got to watch live when chavez was 12 seconds away in 12th round from losing his title, to reach down deep and make a knockout happen in the last 12 seconds of the fight. With all this said, a new generation of boxers have come ,some have left us. Mayweather is a person, without class, all the flashing of wads of money on camera doesnt impress anyone, it is simply showing me he has no class, something all the money in the world cant buy. I wouldnt pay to see this man in a boxing ring or any other venue. I do know that canelo will ,if ever given a chance to fight this man ,will make a fool out of Mayweather, but only if they can make the match happen in a phone booth.Anyone who can get past skin, and loves boxing as much as me,would have to agree, I had rather see a loser with class, than a winner who has no class.

  3. Every fighter in his prime jivaldez I don’t think
So bro. He never fought cotto when he was undefeated, he never wanted to fight margarito after he defeated cotto, he never fought Paul Williams he completely dodged paquiao, waited untill de La hoya and Shane Mosley were way out of their prime. Don’t get me wrong i do understand that mayweather has the best defense I’n the sport but a strong punch from canelo can push him against the ropes just like castillo did. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying canelo can beat him but it’s a close fight

  4. Come on guys, there is no reason to get all disrespectful. I don’t know about everybody but I did expect him to beat Guerrero so nothing out of the ordinary really happened. I’d also expect him to beat Canelo if the fight goes through… I like Canelo but Mayweather is still out his league. The only notable fight in his résumé is Trout. He did win that fight but he also took a few breather rounds. Mayweather has fought every big name out there in their prime and beat them. Except Pacqueao.. Which by the way, he did put the offer in the table and Pacqueao did not take.. That being said, I am not a Mayweather fan. I’d much rather watch a Canelo or a Pacqueao dight than Mayweather.. but… IT IS WHAT IT IS..

  5. Melvin hahaha ur happy that he beat a true lightweight, pat in the back for u bro. I’m not gonna lie mayweather did look impressive although it did have alot to do with him fighting guerrero lol. For the record alot of us did not pay! Mayweather needs to pick another date other than mexican holidays he should fight on black history month. I wanna see him fight canelo Or is he gonna dodge him just the way he did with pacquiao. By the way these commentators SUCK ASSSSSS !!! Miss Hbo :,(

  6.
