In boxing nothing is ever set in stone. There’s changes as often as I change my underwear and it can become annoying especially if you’re hyped about a fight and all of a sudden something changes. For instance, rumor was that “Canelo” Alvarez was going to face James Kirkland on September 15, well, word is that the Mexican star will now face the tall 6-foot-1 southpaw Paul Williams at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Now this is very interesting. I consider Paul Williams a bigger threat than James Kirkland. Williams has a long reach and powerful jab and being a southpaw is going to give trouble to the 5-foot-9 Alvarez.

“Canelo and Williams is done. Signed, sealed and delivered,” Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer, Alvarez’s promoter, told ESPN.com “I think Williams is the biggest name in the division we could get and he has been known for years as one of the most avoided fighters in boxing. He’s awkward, he’s tall, he’s a dangerous fighter and that’s what you need on a pay-per-view. You need to give fans fights where they don’t know who’s going to win the fight.

“So, yes, it’s a risk for Canelo because Paul Williams is a terrific fighter. But it’s also a dangerous fight for Paul Williams. Some people still underestimate ‘Canelo’ Alvarez but he can compete with anyone and he wants to compete with everyone. People have to remember that Canelo is still only 21 years old but if you want to earn a shot at Floyd Mayweather, you need to be able to pass this kind of test, this tall test.”

For several years, Williams was considered one of the top fighters in the world and is definitely going to be huge test for “Canelo”. I just don’t know if it’s Pay-per-view worthy.

  1. Definetly not a PPV fight, Canelo and Chavez Jr need to fight fighters that are still at their prime. Mayve Televisa and TV Azteca would allow that. I am Mexican, but Chavez is not the real champion the real champion is Maravilla Martinez, and in regards to Canelo please stop the age excuse!! Remember Tito Trinidad, Pipino Cuevas?

  2. I got to agree, Williams will be a huge test but on ppv? No thanks, Canelo should not be headlining ppvs. Should be interesting but not that interesting that I would pay for it. It would have to be a stacked card from top to bottom for me to drop money on it.
