Julio Caesar Chavez Jr worked his way to a tough but surprisingly convincing win over the tough Marco Antonio Rubio last night in San Antonio, Texas.

While many fans felt that Rubio had the toughness and boxing skill set to upset the heavily protected Chavez Jr, Chavez Jr showed his own toughness standing in front of the veteran Rubio. In many instances Chavez Jr was the aggressor and the fighter coming forward landing the more telling shots.

While neither man was never in real danger of being hurt the fight had a underlying sense that Rubio, as he has in previous fights would come through with his late heroics and perhaps could have hurt the younger fighter. While that never came to fruition, what did stand out is how much more aggressive Chavez Jr. has been in his last couple fights.

Yes, a lot has to do with whom he been fighting, his team has created a perfect path winning belts without ever facing a legitimate champion. But one cannot overlook the fact that he is far more aggressive than he was in years past. Will that continue once he faces a real threat? Only time will tell.

However my hat goes off to Top Rank and Freddy Roach into actually creating a good NOT great boxer as many people want to say Chavez Jr. has become. They created something out of nothing (other than a name) over the last 7-8 years.

While Top Rank may be the only promotional company to invest that much time and patience in a fighter such as Chavez Jr. It only furthers the fact that Top Rank has no problem matching their fighters they best way they see fit to make their fighter and Top Rank look the best- add the fact that the sanctioning belts (WBC) have helped create easier than expected paths to a belt so it’s not surprising fans miss out on big fights. (Marrinez v Chavez- Gamboa v Lopez- Mayweather v Pacquiao )

And then…

A drunk driving arrest came to light yesterday as Chavez Jr was arrested two weeks earlier for driving under the influence of alcohol in Los Angeles. While Chavez is innocent until proven guilty, the situation is a head scratcher. Why was he out so late in the first place? Who was he with? The issues that are coming out seem similar to that of a another fighter..

Kelly Pavlik. A fighter who is still struggling with drinking and being a professional boxer. While Pavlik is not so much a professional boxer or champion he once was you hope that the Chavez Jr. is a isolated incident and he learns from it as does Pavlik.

  1. @Erich,
Carlos Ortiz fought 5 top ten ranked fighters before winning his first title. His next 6 opponents were also ranked in the top ten. If you ask me, that’s impressive, and he was great !!

  2. Well, the kid kept his record clean … that´s all about what´s proboxing is … he will make his way … tell me one of the greats who was not driven slowly and carefully up the hill

  3. I’d like to see this clown take his training this way against Martinez or Cotto, it will be a mistake to pull the nonsense he pulled during his training for this fight. A true unprofessional is Chavez Jr. He won, it was a good fight but I don’t like him personally.

  4. Congrats to Chavez for his win. It’s funny to me how he told TV Azteca right after the fight that he wants to fight Margarito. Not a word about Martinez or Cotto.
