Jhonny Gonzalez scored a fourth round TKO against Tomas Villa in his first 126lb title defense on Saturday in Atlantic City N.J. to retain the WBC World Featherweight title.

Rumor is that Jhonny Gonzalez turned down an offer to defend his belt against former titleholder Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KOs) on Sept. 10 on HBO in Atlantic City.

Now, Gamboa is aiming for Daniel Ponce De Leon. Ponce De Leon is with Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank’s bitter rival, but Bob Arum has said he will co-promote just to make the fight happen.

“I think Gamboa was expected in September, but now he says he’s going with Daniel Ponce De Leon,” said Gonzalez. “I want to face the best in the featherweight division and hopefully I’ll get an opportunity against Juan Manuel Lopez, Orlando Salido, Rafael Marquez, Yuriorkis Gamboa and others. It was a good win but I feel that I’m ready for greater challenges.”

Promoter Oswlado Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo added, “We’re trying to find the best opportunities. Johnny G has shown that he’s back at the top of world boxing and we’re negotiating with those in that top category to face the best.”
