In his first title defense, the WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr scored a fifth round TKO over former Contender Peter Manfredo Jr on Saturday night at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. As expected, Chavez was in command from the opening bell and got the stoppage from referee Laurence Cole at 1:52 of round five after rocking Manfredo and following up with a barrage of unanswered punches.

As Sergio Martinez sat at ringside hoping Chavez grows some balls to fight him, Chavez Jr. said after the fight he will fight whoever his promoter says and that he is even willing to fight “Canelo” Alvarez.

“I’m open to fight anybody,” Chavez said. “There’s a lot guys — there’s Cotto, Margarito, Martinez, and I want to fight the best one for Bob and the best for me.”

Quite honestly I don’t think Chavez Jr. stands a chance with any of them. Cotto and Margarito will destroy him and Martinez will murder him. Can you imagine Martinez landing a brutal punch like the one against Paul Williams?

In my opinion he should fight “Canelo” Alvarez, they’re both young and upcoming.

What’s your opinion, who should Chavez Jr fight next?

  1. To be honest Chavez did great …yes he really hasn’t fought any one worth while ..but I think he is trying to set out of the shadow of his dad and is taking boxing seriously now …against Canelo it would be a good fight because neither one has a great defense ….would go to the distance with Canelo winning by dession….

  2. I dont see why Chavez wount fight Canelo.. Chavez is bigger, Canelo would need to move up a few pounds which is possible.

I will be happy even with Marco Antonio Rubio just like what J.M LOERA said.

I dont even know how Peter Manfredo got a shot at a title shot.. theres so many other boxers in line… but of course Chavez always cherry picking.

  3. Well we all know Martinez is not even an option as Edgar said he’d murder him. Chavez can say he’ll fight anyone because he knows it wont happen not as long as he continues to draw crowds for Arum. He looked a little better in this fight but I expected him to beat Manfredo easily. I agree the best option out there for him is Canelo, he’s bigger than Canelo and neither fighter is complete yet, honestly don’t think there’s much more that can be done with Chavez but Canelo has potential to become the more complete fighter. So if Chavez is gonna fight him and expect to win he better get that fight early next year. Given more time I think Canelo takes a UD but if it happens early next year then Chavez has a legit shot. As for Manfredo, I never thought much of him to begin with but he had a descent round 4 thats about it.

  4. @ Edgar,
The only true middleweight in that bunch is Martinez. Yes, he would destroy Chavez. The other guys you mention are junior middleweights and Chavez has no business fighting them at any weight. Alvarez is also a jr middleweight but I would agree that would be a good catchweight fight with no titles at stake just to see someone loose their perfect mark against bums. This fight would sell big no matter the venue.
