WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0-1, 30 KOs) announced his first title defense against Ronald Hearns (26-2, 20 KOs) on September 17 at the Palenque de Culiacán. Accompanied by his father, the legendary member of the Hall of Famer Julio Cesar Chavez, Chavez Jr. welcomed Ronald, son of the legendary Tommy Hearns.

“This fight is very important to me, fighting at home and will always be special to defend my World Championship, I have trained hard and will do even more to give my people a nice evening this September 17 against a good opponent like Hearns,” stated Chavez Jr.

“I feel fortunate that I have been given this opportunity, I am the son of a legend, which has not been easy, but Chavez Jr. showed me that dreams can be fulfilled and that will come on September 17. I’m not worried about the judges, I will come and do my job,” said Hearns.

Promoter Fernando Beltran stated that despite the recommendations made by the World Boxing Council he could not postpone the fight to September 24 despite attempting it, and that the ticket sales will start on Thursday this week.

The younger brother of Chavez, Omar Chavez (26-0-1, 19KOs) will face Jorge Paez Jr. on September 3 in Chiapas, Mexico.

  1. @ Jonny Boy,
I couldn’t have said it better myself. Besides even if Chavez wasn’t a champion, he’s already 26 years old. How much longer would he need ? ?

  2. @James so according to you since Chavez is “still up and coming” does he deserve to have the title? He’s holding a title meant for champions willing to fight the best. If he’s not ready to man up and defend against the best and not guys who have no business fighting for a title then he should vacate. since he wants to call himself a world champ he should grow a pair and fight the rightful owner of that belt.

  3. chavez jr is not ready for a sergio martinez. hes’s still comin up, he’s a youngin that had no amature career. that turned pro at early age. he is getting better, and does need to fight better opponents but hes not ready for seasoned vets like martinez (pond for pound top 3)

  4. That’s gonna be a hell of a weekend for boxing, Mayweather vs Ortiz, Alvarez vs Gomez, Chavez vs Hearns. I just hope the undercards are good as well.

In all fairness Marco A. Rubio is the rightful #1 challenger since he did win a title eliminator a few months ago. Chavez vs Martinez does sound like a waaaaaaaay better fight though. Rubio says he is willing to bet his purse that he can KO Chavez inside of 8 rounds.

Then again Hearns might just be Chavez’s Buster Douglas in disguise.
    Omar Chavez who ???

  5. No way i’m spending my hard earned pesos on this bullshit ppv card. Chavez Jr needs to man up and fight that title’s rightful owner Sergio Martinez. Can’t wait for Sulaiman to drop dead and stop ruining pro boxing.
