“He always gets nervous, I don’t think he knows how to express himself,” Chavez Jr. says candidly.  “He was a great fighter but I think he loses his patience with Omar and me, he doesn’t know how to tell us things the right way so sometimes he prefers to keep quiet and I also prefer that so that we don’t have any problems.”

julio-cesar-chavez-jr300x350Do you think you have forged your own way or do people still see you as the “Son of Chavez”?

“There is no doubt that my father’s name is still known but I think a lot of people follow me because they like my style, they like the way I fight.  There is a lot of people that support me and a lot of people that criticize me, there is always the doubt if I am going to make it or not but in this sport, nobody is sure.  If they follow me is because people see something good in me.”

From the good and the bad, what did you learn most from him?

“Unconsciously, I fight very much like him, I think it is generic since I don’t try to copy him.  As people, we are very much alike but I try to appreciate the good of him and reproach the bad.”

Do you pressure when people say that you face easy opponents?

“Yes, the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure because of that.  I want the big fights, it would be good for my career, I want people to see that I am ready for those fights so that they believe in me even more.”

“How do you handle that fame that you have since you were born?

“That is very difficult because it is strange for people to speak so highly of you but one has to always remember that all people are the same, there is some more important than others, there is some people that have accomplished more than others but in all reality we are all the same.”
