Well, if everything goes as scheduled it will be over 9 months since the Puerto Rican climbs back in the ring. He last fought Yuri Foreman in June 05, 2010 and is scheduled to fight in March 12, 2011 at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV.

Cotto’s opponent has not been officially announced but one of the potential opponents I have been told is Ricardo Mayorga. The former welterweight and junior middleweight titlist Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KOs), who stopped Michael Walker in the ninth round last Friday at 162 pounds in his first fight in 27 months, is right on the top of the list and is possible he will be next.

Mayorga has also been mentioned as a possible challenger for WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm on February 19 in Stuttgart, Germany. Not sure if this will be a tune up fight or just a rumor.

There was also rumor of Vanes Martirosyan being next in line for Cotto but that was until HBO turn down Cotto-Martirosyan for $1.5 million plus I got word that the 2004 U.S. Olympian will fight on February 05 on Top Rank Live in Palm Springs so he is out of the picture.

The name that keeps popping up like a bad case of herpes is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. For several months he has been mentioned to fight Cotto but again is just rumors at this time.

At this point, its unknown who Miguel Cotto will fight next but one thing is for sure, he will fight on March 12. Last week Cotto and the WBO gave over 100 bikes and more than 600 toys to children in need.

That’s all for now but I will keep you guys posted once I get an update.

  1. cotto vs mayorga does sound interesting, but a fight with Berto or Margarito would be better. After being out of the ring so long it’s smart to have a tune up fight. Mayorga is a clown but a dangerous clown, cotto will still need to watch out.

  2. great tune up. fight is set for march against mayorga. he is climbing that hill with age but he is always dangerouse. this will be a great tune up fight and i see him fighting martinez and margo after that.

  3. Julio Cesar Chavez,Jr. vs Miguel Cotto. It would be a good fight(I think),but why does Chavez,Jr. keep postponing the proposed bout?

  4. im glad he took off to heel. tune up fight in march and then two big fights after. so he will have a busy year. good luck cotto
