I am Fair But Firm, Yea Right!

This past Saturday, it was an awesome night of boxing with some explosive fights. Amir Khan against Marcos Maidana was intense. When Khan landed that brutal left hook into Maidana’s liver, I thought the fight will be over but Maidana showed why he is a worthy opponent and Khan also proved a lot.

In the dramatic 10th round, perhaps the defining moment of Khan’s career so far, he survived a massive onslaught, he kept his composure and never went down. I am not going to take nothing away from Khan’s unanimous decision but I am glad I’m not the only one who noticed Joe Cortez ridiculous act. what happened to, “I am fair, but firm?”

Referee Joe Cortez, who inserted himself in the fight far too often, sure didn’t do Maidana any favors. Khan had tried to tie Maidana up several times but even though Maidana was punching with his free hand, Cortez often jumped in to separate them. The rule is that as long as a hand is free, you’re supposed to punch out of it. Not Cortez’s best night. Still, Khan got the well-deserved victory.

Abner Mares against Vic Darchinyan was also an interesting bout. An accidental head butt in the first round opened a huge gash on the left side of Mares’ hairline but that didn’t stop Mares, he kept pounding away. Darchinyan’s style is very predictable, if you can sustain his power, you will win the fight. By the late rounds, he was tired and huffing for air and eventually was reduced to throwing wild left hands in an apparent desperate effort to take Mares out. Overall it was good fight.

I still think Juan Manuel Marquez versus Michael Katsidis holds the fight of the year. I was watching the replay thanks to my DVR and not once did Katisidis or Marquez hold, it was clearly two warriors moving forward and strictly out slugging each other.

With 2010 coming to an end, what fight do you think deserves the Fight of the Year award?

  1. ok Bori

personally i thought it was a great fight but i see your point..If Khan would of traded much more he would have got into much more trouble.

Khan has been over-publicised. Especially in the UK.

but i think this was his water-shed fight and hopefully much better is to come

  2. @ali nobody said khan didnt win the fight clearly he did i just said he doesnt deserve this type of hype. when he beats somebody good enough then i will give him his respect. i graded that fight with maidana a c+. to much running and holdind for me. this is boxing not ufc

  3. lol loveboxing ur funny. you call me a hater why? cause i dont think this guy has prooven anything by beating a slow and sloppy fighter? he can probably clean up the 140 but who is in the 140? now the 147 lmaooooo you gotta be a real big fan of khan to say that. the liver shot was a work of art. but a liver shot didnt finish maidana and didnt knock him out. the liver shot didnt make him look good in the later rounds. you see a fighter fights 12 rounds might take a round off here or there to rest but when did you see maidana run around the ring hold or look lost. i even think khan forgot his name. even the comentaters during the fight where saying the same thing. khan runs and he is the man but floyd runs and he’s a chicken lmaoooo now that is funny..

  4. @Jonny-boy ,Just for the record ,Bardely and Alex are affraid to fight Maidana .They thought Maidana is going to destroy Khan, but their plans went awry. Both are nothing compare to khan .Alex in the eyes of all boxing fans list the fight against Kotelnik,so his chance to win against Khan is zero.
cleaning the division is not a big deal for Khan ;in fact,it’s a sure thing.
I got amdit it thought Khan moving to 147 is very challenging and a pumpy road .
    We will wait and see.

  5. Wasn’t too thrilled about Cortez, he in my eyes kinda had it out for Maidana at points during the fight. Even my boxing/drinking buddy noticed we both even said it at the same time too. Either way still think Khan would have won regardless. That was expected but i’m not ready to hype him up already, clean up the division then I will take him as a future star. Maidana/Ortiz 2 is what I wanna see good fight that can help the winner to stay alive in the division. Gotta give Maidana some credit for getting up from those wicked body shots, didn’t think he’d get up and end up almost taking Khan out in the 10th.

  6. bori4life…you need to lay off the halucigens over the festive period

I,ve just watched the HBO pod again and can only see one winner

if anything Cortez was favouring Maidana in th 10th by separating the boxers when Khan was holding on

  7. @bori4life,LOL maybe Cortez threw the vicious liver shot for Khan ,or maybe Cortez asked chino to threw an ellbow in order to help Khan .
Come on man .Khan’s haters are asking Khan to fight an eliet fighter. What is Maidana
oh now maidana is a bum .Come on people show some love to the new star King Khan .

  8. @Bori4life,seriously how was the liver shot
that was the shit man .Did you see chino’s face while being on the floor .Chino admit that he was hurt from the punch even after the fight ;thus, the brother got power as well .
Khan is a star like or not .Your opinion is nugatory because you’re no one in the boxing word just a fan like .I don’t claim to be an expert .Cortez did a great job in preventing chino from having his dirty games .For you to belittle Cortez for taking one point for an ellbow tell me that your biased and got no knowledge in boxing .This is sport not politics
if you have your agenda ,just keep it to yourself because the more you write about khan the more you are showing your malice .
I got you and I know what kind of person are from your comments .You’re not fooling me I met a lot people like you .
King khan is the man .
Khan will clean the the 140 and 147 division.
    Canelo,Margarito,Mosely,Juda,Berto and Floyd
are going down .The brother got it .
    peace
    ,

  9. @Bori4life,khan will clean the 140 then then 147 and then coming to knock you out cold .
hehehe.Come on man .Why all this hate just admit it the guy won covincingly .Get it over it dude .

  10. lmaooooo khan was dirtier than maidana on this fight. cortez and khan vs maidana and king khan almost left in a stretcher if it wasnt for cortez. khan ran and held all day and that elbow was bs he took a point for some dumb shhhhhhht lol khan went in there fighting 2 people. ive seen this happen alot in boxing. maidana just earned 3 level points with me. now he is in level 8 while khan is in 4.

  11. @Ali,thanks brother for being fair and accentuating all aspects of the fight.Amir king khan won the fight without a doubt .
King khan shut all the negative criticism about his ability as a fighter .He is on the cusp of stardom .

  12. got to agree loveboxing

Khan stepped up a level on Saturday night.

There existed a huge question mark over his chin since the Bredis Prescott K/O but that was pretty much dispelled against Maidana.

He soaked up some brutal punishment in the 10th and hung on but still responded in the 12th.

A well deserved victory and the Cortez effect had no say in the final result

  13. maidana was trying all his dirty work not his boxing ability .He was able to put Khan down because he lacks skills .In my book Khan took the advantage of all maidana’s flaws and beat him up at his own game specially when he knocked him down .

  14. After years of watching Joe Cortez prove himself to be one of the best referees in the business, both my wife and I were surprised (to say the least) to see him act virtually as a member of Kahn’s team, interfering in the fight too often, breaking up “clinches” pretty much whenever Maidana was getting the better of Kahn on the inside, etc., etc. We hoped (and still do) that something was going on that Cortez could see in the ring that we couldn’t on TV, but if so, we’d sure like know what it was!

  15. Sorry man

I thought that Cortez did i fine job and should have penalised Madaina more. Khan deservedly won and Madiana was using all sorts of dirty tricks during the clinches. He had a chance to finish Khan off in the 10th but had tired himself out.

Speaking as a neutral (Scotsman in Mexico) i think there can be an anti-english bias sometimes especially in the commentary.

I remember Ricky Hatton not getting the decisions against Mayweather. In the end he deservedly lost and the British based fans accepted that.

Personally, Saturdays fight was my fight of the year with the Marquez encounter a close second.

But Carl Froch vs Abraham was the perfromance of the year. Which has been largely unheralded in th States

  16. Cortez did a great job.He took a point from maidana for throwing an ellbow .An ellbow for god sake .It’s not the octagon to throw an ellbow .Khan landed way more clean shots than maidana according to the numbers .Amir
khan is moving to do more damage at 140 division .King khan is the winner like it or not .
Even maidana himself admit it at the post fight press conference .
I believe it is the fight of the year without a doubt .
Throwing an ellbow give a break .
