On Friday night from the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in San Diego, CA, Golden Boy Promotions in association with Don Chargin Productions and Jorge Marron Productions presented Solo Boxeo Tecate “Path to Glory,” broadcast on Spanish Language Network’s Telefutura. In the eight round super featherweight main event, undefeated 20-year-old Santa Ana, CA, native Ronny Rios (13-0, 6KOs) was a class above battle tested veteran Adolfo “Terror” Landeros (20-17-1, 9KOs), as the rising prospect never allowed the Aztec warrior in the fight en-route to a clear cut unanimous decision victory.

From the outset Ronny Rios was firing off piston-like jabs and went to work committing to a brutal body attack as the 31-year-old challenger from Ciudad De Mexico, MEX, got off to a slow start. Rios was connecting with numerous straight rights to the mid-section behind his jab as Adolfo tried to land with left hooks and right uppercuts to no avail. In the first frame, Rios’ razor sharp jab busted up Landeros’ nose which began to bleed as water also flooded the Mexican’s right eye.

In the 2nd round, Rios opened up with big uppercuts using both fists as Landeros was throwing uppercuts of his own as well as left hooks to the body and head with minimal success. Ronny dictated the pace all night and was beating Landeros to the punch connecting on big overhand rights to close out the period. Adolfo wasn’t using very many jabs while Rios set up most of his handy work behind the jab and continued to land the straight right to Adolfo’s mid-section time and time again.

Landeros picked up the pace in the 3rd and 4th rounds but his strikes were having a hard time finding their target as Rios was skillful at deflecting punches with his mitts. Rios landed some bombs and was throwing his punches with authority as they popped when they landed but the rugged Adolfo had good whiskers and was never hurt in the fight. Rounds five through seven took on the same storyline in a pretty one-sided but good paced and entertaining boxing display by Ronny Rios.

The scrap had good back and forth action which is the trademark for “Terror” Landeros. He brawls as the gatekeeper, always comes to give hot prospects everything they can handle and more and if they can beat the Mexican, it’s a big step in towards proving they deserve the label of prospect. This is exactly what Ronny Rios was able to achieve as he breezed through Adolfo in a virtual shutout never allowing himself to take the punishment that most Landeros’ adversaries experience when in the squared circle with the tough chinned pug.

In the eighth and final frame the warriors gave the fans what they came for in toe-to-toe action and Rios dropped heavy artillery pasting his knuckles to Landeros’ face but the winded Mexican never stopped swinging as anything else from Adolfo would be uncivilized.

When it was all said and done, Ronny Rios continued his ascend up the ladder winning an eight round unanimous decision with scores of 80-72 thrice.

In the eight round featherweight co-feature, San Diego’s undefeated California State featherweight champion Chris “SD Kid” Martin (21-0-2, 6KOs) left much to be desired defeating Yogli “Olafo” Herrera (22-14, 15KOs) of San Onofre, COL, but showed the wherewithal to adapt and beat the Colombian by unanimous decision.

The “SD Kid” entered the fight a little complacent getting off to a crawling start while his foe Yogli burst onto the canvas unleashing hard overhand rights, left hooks and stout uppercuts as he circled the ring to the left of the stalking Californian. Martin was mainly throwing the jab and would periodically look down at the canvas and wing wild overhand rights that were battering the unsuspecting air and nothing more. Towards the end of the 2nd round, Herrera uncorked a counter left hook that found Martin right on the mouth stopping him dead in his tracks and it looked as though Yogli brought a full picnic basket as he was up 2-0 after six minutes of fisticuffs.

Martin came back in the 3rd rattling off rigorous right and left crosses to Herrera’s torso but was still having trouble zoning in on Yogli’s head as it was moving about quite frequently. The “SD Kid” won the 3rd but the 4th, 5th and 6th were close rounds that could have gone either way. I was leaning a little towards Yogli because he was taking the initiative and beating Martin to the punch as Chris’ face wore more leather than was to be expected by the late replacement from Miami, Florida by way of Colombia. Chris didn’t seem to be himself and was allowing frustration to seep into his conscience when Yogli would hold often and at the end of the 4th round, Martin did what you don’t do, he looked away from Yogli to complain to referee Tony Crebbs about a low blow and got clipped with a Herrera left hook, only adding frustration to the “SD Kid’s” feelings.

Martin was feeling the crunch and showed the spirit and intelligence to kick it up a gear in the 7th and the 8th and final round as he came out boasting an accurate arsenal of left hooks and right crosses both to the body and head which was the first repeated success Martin had upstairs. Martins furious two-fisted attack to Herrera’s torso early paid dividends late as the Colombian was huffing for air trying to grasp onto the surging Chula Vista prospect who easily took the last two rounds.

I thought the fight was closer to a draw and am not sure what fight the judges were watching but they obviously liked what they saw from the “SD Kid” as he cruised to a unanimous decision with tallies of 80-72 twice and 78-74. Despite struggling in the tussle, the WBC’s #13 ranked Chris Martin did what he had to do to claim superiority and that speaks volumes of the “SD Kid’s” resilience and determination as he stays undefeated moving forward in his quest for glory.

The San Diego spectators decibel level rose to its peak when in the fight of the night junior lightweights Angel Torres (2-4-2, KO) and Ronald Hurley (5-5-2) rushed into a heated debate and so did their supporters as both figthers rooting sections were affronting each other through the duration of the contest from opposite sides of the room with verbal taunts and body language.

It was non-stop action from beginning to end as both gladiators infiltrated the fight at a blistering pace winging nukes with reckless abandoned. Hurley hurt Torres on three different occasions and wobbled him in the first while Torres showed mettle staying on his feet to unload and connect with grenades of his own.

Long Beach, California native Ronald Hurley was just too much for the New Yorker though and when the cards were announced Hurley won a unanimous decision with catalogs of 40-36 and 39-37 two times.

To round out the card, junior welterweight Rolando Perez (1-0, KO), making his pro debut out of Chula vista, CA, thumped the over matched Federico Martinez (0-2) of Lakeside, CA, as he blew up Federico’s right eye and bloodied his nose in an un-troublesome path to victory when Martinez couldn’t answer the bell for the 3rd round awarding Perez a 2nd round TKO triumph.
