Great Fights in Empty Arenas

Steven Cofield from Yahoo Sports wrote an interesting article. Manny Pacquaio brought in a huge crowd of 41,000 to Cowboy Stadium, but four other solid U.S. fight cards featuring high-level fighters did horribly at the gate. What’s the problem?

At 4,100, the Andre Ward-Sakio Bika fight in Oakland was least attended. In the scaled-down Convention Hall in Atlantic City, only 5,500 witnessed Sergio Martinez’s spectacular knockout of Paul Williams.

And in Las Vegas, the “Fight Capital of the World,” 4,818 watched Juan Manuel Lopez down Rafael Marquez. Two weeks later, 4,920 showed up to see Juan Manuel Marquez rumble with Michael Katsidis in Sin City.

That’s some very low numbers considering these where some great fights. What do you think happen?

  1. @ Tengeka hey buddy I think you need to watch the fights again he was knocked down 3 times in that “particular” round and Marquez went down once against Mayweather. Next time if your memory isn’t so great watch the fights before you talk about them. With the way they are cherry picking for Manny you shouldnt talk about Marquez have you seen him pick a fight we knew he’d win without even thinking twice. Marquez is 37 and still fighting the best in his division more than I can say about Pacquiao’s recent 2 fights two guys who pac-man was way quicker then and really shouldnt have been in the running for the fight with him. Marquez has fought young and hungry competition and a bigger stronger and quicker fighter Mayweather, which is the equivalent of pacquiao fighting Martinez will he do it? Hell No! and he is even quicker then Martinez.

  2. Ops, I miss the letter T in my last sentence . . should be – it affects not I affects! Sorry, Marquez! O, by the way, do you really think you were beaten by Mayweather, Mr. Marquez? I think you won coz you never got knocked down. And u were the relentless aggressor in that fight! I think you won, man! LOL

  3. This proves that Manny Pacquiao is the most exciting and fascinating boxer in the world today (inside and outside the ring). Where can you find a boxer today who is a “savage” inside the ring; but “kind-hearted and humble” outside the ring? You can only find in the Philippines in the person of – – MANNY PACQUIAO! Mayweather calls him many (bad) names; he never retaliated at all. Even just calling Mayweather Monkey instead of Money by adding letter K in between the letters N and E! He did not! He is a very calm person. That’s what makes him very popular, loved, and endeared by his thousands of fans including many sports and movie/tv celebrities all over the world. In all the fights he lost, he never claimed and shouted to the whole world that HE WON! No, he did not (unless I missed it! He respects the decisions of the judges. He is aware that he is a boxer not a judge. Unlike Marquez that he thinks since he is a boxer he can also judge his match . . and say to the world – I WON . . I BEAT PACQUIAO – – even wearing a “I beat Pacquiao twice” t-shirt, but he never mentioned that in one of their fights, one of the judges should have scored 7 instead of 8 for him coz he was knocked down twice in a particular round!O, boy! So, Marquez, don’t ever drink your urine again, ha. It’s no good, man. I affects your good judgment, man! LOL

  4. yep pacquiao is unusual and interesting boxer that’s why, and probably he cares about his fans ans his people back in the Philippines. Can you tell any boxer who did just like that?

  5. cuz alot of ppl dont know whos fightimg who..i always have to find out threw the internet..going to boxing website..they should show whos fighting who on tv..n i think boxing would sale more tickets

  6. I was one in attendance at the Marquez vs Katsidis card. The top ticket price was high, but I forked it over as I love a good seat at a great fight. Boy did I feel like a sucker. Golden Boy is just not fan friendly. The second the seats went on sale I was on the phone to ticketmaster. The floor seats were not available. What?! Now everyone knows they were not sold out at that point. Goldenboy held the entire floor from the general public. My seat was in a corner. I was at the first fight at a then empty arena, payed full price, and felt like dirt as all the people who had been handed freebies gradually came in and sat in the prime seats. Very nice way to treat boxing fans Golden Boy and now people wonder why so few attended a great fight card. Just ask the Promoter. I have received fair seats from every other major promoter. Never again will I allow myself to be treated this way by Golden Boy!

  7. In California we have double digit unemployment. Some people here are still struggling. I remember buying a decent seat to Marquez vs Vazquez III in Carson California at $75.00. I live in South San Diego so figure in gas, parking, souvenirs, etc. You are looking at over $150.00 just to attend the fight live. I could have very well just watch it on Showtime at home with friends and had a few beers and saved a lot of money.
Even today, under similar situations, a lot of people are doing the latter.

  8. There are just not real Boxing fans out there.

There are only Manny Pacquiao fans!

Plus people are broke these days!!
