In the last 45 days, my family and I have been beset by tragedy and thus my failure to keep up with my weekly musings.  No need to get into what happened but only to look into the future.  With that said, I present this week’s Random Flurried Ramblings…

mayweathermarquezlvpc_hogan_18_240x230_20090810*I am sure by now many of you have seen the scene in HBO’s second episode of Mayweather-Marquez 24/7 where the Mexican Marquez drinks his own urine claiming that it helps him replenish lost vitamins.  I don’t care if every sip of urine took five years off and a hundred dollar bill magically appeared in my pocket, there is no way in hell I’m pounding pee.  I don’t believe Marquez really drank his own urine, if you search out the clip on youtube, you can see that at the end when he drinks it up and raises his fist, there is a small hint of a smile on his lips which clues me in that it was a hoax….

demarco1*Current #1 WBC ranked lightweight Antonio DeMarco will more than likely climb in a ring once again on October 31st.  A venue has not been announced but more than likely it will be at the Honda Center in Anaheim or Las Vegas.  Although DeMarco has repeatedly stated that he would like to challenge the current champion Edwin Valero of Venezuela, in negotiations for the bout, Valero stated that he did not want to face DeMarco until Antonio was his mandatory for at least six months.  Now, it looks like DeMarco will be facing hard hitting Nicaraguan Jose Alfaro for the interim title.

180px-Edwin_Valero*Speaking of Valero, I was told while I was covering the Loyes Promotions fight night this last Saturday at the Tijuana Municipal Auditorium that the WBC lightweight champion himself, Edwin Valero, was in town handling some visa business.  When his handler, who will remain anonymous, was asked why he didn’t bring him to the fights, he let me know in no uncertain terms that the guy wasn’t the best company…..

*Former WBO bantamweight champion Cruz Carbajal will be fighting this Saturday night in Nayarit, MX, vs. Z Gorres of the Philippines.  Carbajal has some ties to San Diego as he has fought here and Tijuana and was trained by San Diego based trainer Bumpy Parra and his son Vince.

*I was told by Romulo Quirarte Jr., assistant trainer of the CREA Gym in Tijuana, that Marvin Quintero broke his left hand in the second round in his disappointing loss to Tyrone Harris on Showtime last month.  We wish “Cachorro” a speedy recovery.

*There seems to be an exodus of fighters leaving the “Jibaro” Gym in Tijuana.  The former bantamweight champion Raul Perez, better known as “Jibaro” was building quite a stable and all of a sudden, many have left the gym located in the tough Zona Norte of Tijuana.  At one point, Perez trained the Estrella brothers, Omar and Jose, former light middleweight champion Alejandro “Terra” Garcia and San Diego transplant Israel Ornelas.  As of Saturday night, I saw both the Estrellas and Ornelas climb into the ring under the watchful eye of different trainers.  The couple of fighters remaining with “Jibaro” are former minimumweight champion Roberto “Mako” Leyva and two-time National amateur champion Jose De Alba who was set to make his debut on Saturday night until his opponent was not able to pass his medical exam.  No word whether super flyweight Javier Gallo is still with the former champion.
