ALVARADO-RIOS-640

Well, it is a fight many boxing fans wanted to see again. A rematch between Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios was definitely on my wish list for 2013. Putting these two in the ring again is like putting two pit bulls in a cage fighting over a piece of raw meat. Their first fight was nothing short of ferocious last October at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. It is just a continuation for two of boxing’s toughest junior welterweights, and according to Brandon Rios, it’s like “World War II.”

The rematch is scheduled for March 30th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first fight was seven rounds of bumps, bruises, and blood with both fighters going toe to toe and blow for blow, until Rios TKO’d Alvarado in the 7th round in what many observers and fight fans felt was a premature stoppage. This time Rios wants there to be no mistake about it, and hopes to finish Alvarado with a 10 count. “F*** it, let’s do it again” were the excited and emphatic words from Rios after their first battle.

Thanks to Top Rank, they are going to do it again, and it should be a fight of the year candidate in 2013. Although both are deserving of matchups with other top fighters in the junior welterweight division, we are going to have to see them beat the hell out of each other a second time. It’s great for fans but not necessarily for Rios and Alvarado. Rios was projected to fight Manny Pacquiao in April, prior to Pacquiao’s devastating knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marques in December. Consequently, he is now fighting Alvarado instead, and the feud between Golden Boy and Top Rank Promotions does not make things any more promising for Rios or Alvarado to get other top bill fights in the near future.

Golden Boy has most of the top fighters at 140 in their back pocket, including current champions Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia, but don’t look to see them or any of Golden Boy’s fighters at 140 signing to fight these two pit bulls due to the poor relationship between the promotion companies. Fortunately for fight fans, we will again see one of the best fights of the year in 2013. Unfortunately for Rios and Alvarado, unless Top Rank and Golden can learn to work together, we may see a saga of fights between these two, similar to that of Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquaio. Rios vs. Alvarado II; thanks Top Rank, even though you have no other choice.

  1. Rios would spank Danny man c’mon, Danny seems to be moving back, he fought Erik morales that’s in no way a worthy opponent. He did well against glass jaw Amir khan but had him outclassed the first rounds. Then he rematches morales again which there Was no doubt in mind to even rematch lol. Now he’s scheduled to fight zab Judah wtf! Rios is a brawler he’s the future in boxing much respect

  2. I think it’s going to be a great rematch between these two fighters. I have to disagree with M. Maestas in his assessment of Danny Garcia. I don’t think either one of these two fighters would beat Danny Garcia. They are both tough and rugged, but they lack the skills to pull of the win. Also I have to say that Garcia has already proven himself with his fists, just ask Eric Morales or Amir Khan.

  3. I would definitely like to see that fight, particularly given I believe both fighters could beat D. Garcia, of who I am not a big fan of until his fists do the talking for him rather than his daddy.
