Fighters Tee Off on the Course!

The annual Thompson Boxing Promotions’ (TBP) Golf Tournament of Champions was a knockout day for those taking their swings on the course. Here’s my recap of the KO day in the desert which featured pro boxers Saul Sanchez, Richard Brewart Jr. and Isaac Zarate.

Known for their monthly live fights in Southern California and beyond, the TBP crew also hosts a yearly golf event with their vendors, sponsors and customers from various Thompson businesses. Founder/President Ken Thompson, General Manager/Matchmaker Alex Camponovo, Operations Director Jeanette Gonzales and Team TBP welcomed approximately 140 participants playing in this year’s tourney held at the Desert Princess Country Club in Cathedral City (near Palm Springs).

The promotional company has had an exceptionally busy year with their own live shows at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario and Omega Products Events Center in Corona plus the recent victory of their homegrown champion Daniel Roman.

The May 3 golf outing featured 18 holes on the gorgeous Lagos and Cielo courses, a Hole in One contest, fun refreshment booths, and a meet-and-greet with ring card girls Ashley and Lizzie.

The players tooled around on the golf carts while taking in the desert sights on the surrounding fairways. The weather was warm and breezy and the mood jovial as the prizefighters took off the gloves and picked up the clubs during this special event. Also joining in the competition were ring announcer Sonny Franco, boxing trainer Henry Ramirez, boxing manager Steve Martini and trainer/artist Steve Harpst.

After 18 holes of golf, it was time for the awards ceremony. Guest enjoyed a delicious dinner and raffle prizes as Hall of Fame promoter Ken Thompson and emcee Sonny Franco revealed this year’s victors in the “best ball” four-man scramble tourney. First place went to the Steve Sadler team with a final tally of 59 and tied for second place were the Daniel Soto Team and the Joe Dodd foursome with a score of 60.

In the Celebrity Division, Saul Sanchez placed first and Richard Brewart Jr. won second place. It was their first time joining the festivities and the young sluggers enjoyed their brief break from training.

This May fiesta is always a blast and a big hit with the boxers and golfers at this year’s tournament. Congrats to all!
