Step one toward a 2013 Superfight with Floyd Mayweather is complete thanks to the judges in San Antonio, Texas Saturday night at the Alamodome. In what many viewers felt was a very close fight; even underwhelming for the most part, the judges at ringside had it remarkably lopsided for Canelo Alvarez (although not surprising). The worst of three scores had the bout 118-109, which makes me wonder about a biased and pre-contemplated scorecard.
Being a fan of both fighters, who are both legitimate prizefighters and professionals of the sport, I was not inclined to score it one way or the other. Subsequently, I got a little less action than I had hoped for, but scored the bout 114-113 for Austin Trout. It probably could have been scored either way or even a draw. Canelo did land the harder shots and the knockdown in the seventh round which was likely the difference. However, Trout landed more combinations and more punches in the fight, but was never able to accomplish any real damage to the young Mexican champion who moves to 43-0.
Trout and his New Mexico fans have nothing to be ashamed about. He gave a tough showing against Alvarez, who was notably impressive with his defensive movement in the fight. Canelo was surprisingly hard to hit. I originally expected to see both fighters do a little more damage than what they each did respectively. Canelo, unlike his past bouts, was not coming forward or throwing vicious body shots or combinations, and to the contrary was focused more on defense and counter punching which is what I would have expected more from Trout. Unfortunately, we got we got, but both fighters did learn a lot from the fight, and each have their most notable opponent on their records. It will be interesting to see where each fighter goes from here.
If there is a Superfight with Mayweather in the making for Canelo, the next step is Mayweather defeating Robert Guerrero on May 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Should Mayweather win as expected, he may be more inclined to sign the dotted line given Alvarez was less then impressive against Trout and somewhat underwhelming. Time will tell, but after discussion with fellow writer Gabreal Gallegos, there is already talk of a fight with Miguel Cotto who was also part of the promotions for the undercard of the event this past Saturday. For those who think Cotto is done, I would not bet against him throwing a wrench into things.
There were times in rounds I wouldn’t want to have been either fighter; in example when Trout was hurt and when Canelo took rounds off. As I originally posted my issue with Canelo was he didn’t box 12 ROUNDS rather he looked good and connected in some rounds and others it appeared he was taking rounds off. When the going gets tough I want to see him put his will on the other boxer but that wasn’t the case. However, in my opinion Trout boxed 12 rounds and never wavered even when he did go down. More impressed with Trout and less impressed with Canelo as a result. I like warriors and Canelo knew he was up in the fight due to the scoring and coasted afterwards…that’s some b.s.
Come on guys is not that hard… At the end of a close fight you should
ask your self this question: WHO WOULD I RATHER BE??? Trout- Who did bring a more agressive offense throwing more quantity but MISSED punches…OR… Canelo- Who threw quality punches that connected and HURT Trout and a better defense? Who do you want to be? I would rather be Canelo, WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY HE WON THE FIGHT… That being said, Mayweather is still the boxing king and I don’t see Canelo ready for such fight. There are still other great fighters he can beat, get better and make an even bigger name to make that Mega fight. But I would still pay to see that fight..
Look at u guys Criticizing canelo in this fight when in reality we all should be congratulating him for stepping up to the plate. Both fighters gave fans what we really want to see, unlike mayweather still ducking! Canelo has plenty to learn yet at 22 he has done plenty. Weather u like him or hate him this kid can punch! Trout is a very difficult fighter to look good against just ask cotto who gave a great fight against mayweather and looked outclassed against trout. Canelo was the aggressor of the fight landing punches that were causing damage.

With any damage. I had canelo above by 2 points. I don’t understand how fans expected more from this fight ? These two were so evenly matched there was no possible
Way canelo or trout could shine in this fight.. With that said mayweather needs to step up against canelo if he is big enough to fight Marquez and Guerrero who in reality are true lightweights he is big enought to fight canelo. Canelo needs to work on his stamina he fuels out too fast, as far as power if cotto troubled him he has no idea what he has stored !

A lot of controversy is now brewing concerning this fight and the decision, or let’s just say “the inevitable” decision . I have an idea ! How about giving the very deserving Austin Trout an immediate rematch !?! The fans would love to see it, and it could certainly settle most of the doubts that are out there right now….. Oh, wait a minute, I had suddenly forgotten that Golden Boy had made sure that there was no return bout clause for Trout if he were to lose the fight, there was only a return bout guarantee for Alvarez . What was I thinking ?! ( When Oscar looks into the mirror these days I wonder if he can see Don King’s shadow ? Perhaps as Oscar ages he’ll start to look more and more like King ..)
EZ E, you’re spot-on ! I personally had stated on this web site before this match ever took place that a decision in this fight had already been predetermined, and two of the judges scorecards proved that assumption to be correct. It also appears that there are a lot of fans that either have no idea how to actually score a boxing match, or they’re so biased towards their favorite fighter that the other opponent may-as-well be a ghost. And just look at the fighters contract clause that stated that Alvarez was assured a rematch if he lost, and Trout was not ! I don’t remember of hearing of a championship match contract set-up like that , ever !? Bottom-line is that unless Trout were to KO Alvarez, he went into Texas with no chance of winning a decision, period. And I’m pleased to see and hear that so many fans, even fans of Alvarez of which I am one, recognize that the politics in Boxing never cease to stain the sport.
Canelo is watching to many videos of Delahoya in his latter years….look good for three rounds then takes five off. He better step it up and when he puts together a complete fight for 12 rounds ill get back on the bandwagon but for now I’m dissapointed. Andre Ward is still my favorite boxer!
Props to the author. I was a huge Canelo fan but he was a bit flat fighting a caliber fighter and yes he has power but you can’t not through punches and expect to win over Mayweather! I had Trout win by a round despite him getting knocked down. Trout needs to work on improving his power and hell easily beat Canelo if they were to meet up again.
I agree with @ MMaestas The fight was very close. Canelo is normally the aggressor and he wasn’t that night. Reminder the other two judges scored the bout 115-112. which is fair.

Bottom line is it was a close fight. That is my biggest argument. It’s apples to oranges with opinion on who won the fight. I agree Trout never hurt Canelo, but not only did Trout throw more punches, he also landed more. If scoring on sheer damage, then yes Canelo did more but that’s not how boxing is scored either. At the end of the day, I like both fighters and they both move on to great careers from here.
Really??? “Author”?? You had it for Trout or a draw??? I agree that the 118-109 score was a ridiculous one, but Canelo Alvarez won the fight. All my respect for Trout cuz he fought hard and made a good fight but he just couldn’t connect his punches. You saying that he should have won cuz he threw more combinations just doesn’t make any sense. You have to hit the other fighter!! Unless you saw a different fight… Trout couldn’t connect and never hurt Canelo. On the other hand, Canelo was connecting jabs, uppercuts and knocked him down with a solid right hand. You definitely have the right of your opinion however wrong it may be..
I had the bout 116-114 for Alvarez, with the knockdown being the difference. There’s no question that Trout was the “busier” boxer, but a good portion of those punches were slipped or slapped away by Canelo, who proved to be better defensively than most experts thought. And when Trout landed clean leather, Alvarez was never fazed. By contrast, Austin’s knees buckled on a few other occasions besides his visit to the canvas.
Canelo Alvarez will have to continue to improve in order to beat Mayweather. But while I didn’t agree at all with the scoring from at least one of the judges, there was no question in my mind that Alvarez outpointed Trout, and is probably the better fighter.
The author got it right about trout throwing combinations at canelo. But most of the missed, giving the him impression that trout was throwing more and doing more work.
The scoring proved that Trout was NEVER gonna get a fair shake. His ONLY hope was to score a knockout, nothing less.
