Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has been training in Las Vegas for his upcoming fight on June 16 against middleweight contender Andy Lee. The location where the fight was originally scheduled at the Sun Bowl stadium in Texas is still up in the air due to the drug cartel issue.

According to some sources, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr reportedly signed an agreement to face Sergio Martinez in September and his fight with Lee is his tune up fight. Though I would love to see Chavez vs Martinez, I am still not convinced the fight will ever happen.

According to Boxing Scene, Martinez who is coming off of a stoppage win on March 17 over Matthew Macklin, wants Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31 KOs), the WBC middleweight title holder, to agree to Olympic-style drug testing.

Word is that Chavez is refusing the drug test. Though I am confident that Martinez can beat Chavez even with steroids, I do think it’s only fair Chavez gets tested.

For one, Chavez last fought on February 4 and for some weird reason he didn’t receive a post-fight drug test after his fight with Marco Antonio Rubio, as the WBC said the forgot to administer a test.

Considering he was arrested for a DUI a week before the Rubio fight and how mysteriously weighed in at 159.5 pounds but weighted 181 pounds on the day of the fight makes you wonder.

Secondly, in November 2009 Chavez Jr. tested positive for a diuretic—a banned substance that can help lose weight and could be used to cover up steroid use in a drug test. Chavez Jr. was suspended for seven months and fined.

I could clearly see why Martinez is asking for a drug test.

Overall I still don’t see this fight happening, Chavez has a reputation of pulling out of fights days before the fight. I say Chavez Jr. will vacate his WBC title before he faces Martinez.

Until I see both fighters in the ring, I will believe it.

  1. @Kerry, while you’re bullshitting the WBC had striiped Ward but then gave him back the title when Dirrell was injured. Doesn’t make sense but it happened.

  2. Jonny-boy, you called it, I forgot that it was in Texas. Lee aint winning a single round on the scorecards.

  3. @ Kerry, I got to agree with you about Lee, he’s in no way a pushover. I just have two issues preventing me from picking him to win 1- It’s going down in Texas and 2- I don’t think he can knock Chavez out, which is probably the only way he can win. Even if he outclasses Chavez it’s very likely that the judges will already have their scorecards filled out in favor of Chavez. I agree Chavez will more than likely vacate before fighting Martinez, which will prove to most fans what we already know he fears Martinez.

  4. The Chavez/Rubio incident can’t stink more because all the worms have eaten the carcas already! You can’t tell me of any other fighter that a day before fight night weight 23 pounds less without some heavy assistance. Hell, look at the troubles Rios had twice to make weight in his last two fights. Chavez was about 165 a couple of hours before weight in and suddently he stops the scale 159.5? Then they forgot to do the required urine tests?

This chicken chavez should be ashame of not accepting the Martinez demands if he fears nothing about what can be found. Just another excuse like Manny Pacquiao’s. Strip his belt if he doesnt face Martinez!

  5. Everyone’s talking about Chavez fighting Martinez, I don’t think he’s even beating Andy Lee. Well, let me rephrase that. He will win 4 rounds and win a split decision 117-111, 116-112 and 1 judge will give it to Lee 115-113. Then vacate the title and move to super middleweight. WBC will start looking for a way to strip Andre Ward and line up Chavez for a title.

  6. I still have my doubts regarding the Rubio weigh in. The smoking gun is the DUI arrest where he was a reported 173 lbs just 12 days before the fight. Are we to believe that Chavez dropped 13 lbs in twelve days ?? Why would you need to drop your chones before weighing in ? He came in at 159.5 lbs. Do underwear weigh 1/2 lbs ? Mine don’t and I wear a size 40 waist. Mr Sulaiman conveniently looks away although he is front and center. The cover up of the scale is just that, a cover up. No way he dropped that much weight and still do well in the fight.

Anyway I don’t believe the fight will happen until I see both guys in the ring.

  7. I agree Edgar, I won’t believe it until I see it. Chavez has been caught cheating before, so I don’t blame Martinez for wanting Olympic style testing. Either way I’d still take Martinez to beat Chavez, hopefully it does happen but I’m not holding my breath
