A Big Year for Boxing!

After a great year of boxing in 2011, fans can continue to look forward to quality fights in 2012. Here is my 5 reason breakdown of why:

1. Pacquaio-Mayweather– People are getting used to the fact that this megafight may never happen. We have moved on. Although it would be great to see the two greatest fighters of recent years throw down, everyone has already prepared himself or herself for the possibility that this fight may never happen. If it does, that is just another plus!

2. The maturity of Chavez Jr.- Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is a fan friendly fighter that carries one of the most notable names in boxing history. He is getting to the point in his career in the terms of skills and recognition of a big step up in competition. His first test is Marco Antonio Rubio (bet on that match in our boxing betting feature). Rubio derailed Mario Lemiux in 2011. Will Rubio beat Chavez Jr. and allow critics to finally allow their past words to speak truth or will Chavez Jr. prove the critics wrong and continue to beat better competition? Either way, Chavez Jr. will have a big year, whether it is a big realization that he is far from the elite level or the chance to truly make it big as a boxing star.

3. NBC Sports Network- NBC Sports Network and Main Events are just beginning what could be one of today’s most influential boxing programs. With a very good budget, Main Events will be able to bring exciting events to the public television watchers across the country. Lets hope this works out and that more than 4 fights a year are seen on cable.

4. The Emergence of Boxing’s next stars- Adrien Broner quickly impressed the boxing world with 2 exciting knockouts on HBO. This is only the beginning for this young, talented, fan friendly boxer. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is one exciting fighter. He is skilled. He hits hard. He gets hit as well. Back and forth action is turning Canelo into one of the years most fan friendly fighters. With much competition in his division, it will be exciting to see his future fights. Seth Mitchell may be our heavyweight hope. Regardless, he is exciting to watch. Gary Russell Jr. and Erislandy Lara both are very good fighters who need more television time. They will showcase their talents on Showtime in the first quarter of the year. Last but not least, Andre Ward. Andre Ward is deserving of a top 5 P4P place. Watch him as he continues to build his legacy.

5. Back in the Mix- Miguel Cotto, although never off the grid, propelled himself back into the big fight (Pacquaio and Mayweather) contention. If neither of those pan out, Cotto will fight anyone, including Sergio Martinez. James Kirkland rebounded from his devastating first round knockout loss to demolish Alfredo Angulo.

With 2012 being young, there will be plenty more reasons to realize that 2012 will be a great year.

  1. Besides what is listed here, we got some great fights scheduled that all can have the potential to earn fight of the year. Two fights i’m most looking forward to: Alexander/Maidana and Kirkland/Molina. The style contrast of both fights are classic. I think Maidana takes out Alexander if he does not he will lose he can’t leave it to the lousy judging that St. Louis has. People will think i’m crazy but I have Molina taking Kirkland by 3rd round K.O. Donaire/Vazquez has promise too but I think Donaire puts him away quite easily. Looking forward to the progression of Seth Mitchell although I dont think he’ll be ready in time or if ever to fight a Klitschko.
