“Mile High” Mike Alvarado (32-0) won with an impressive 10th rd stoppage of well traveled Breidis Prescott (24-4) Saturday night on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. However, up until the 10th rd, it looked as though Alvarado would lose his first fight at the hands of Prescott. Prescott was landing flush shots on Alvarado most of the night. However in the 7th and 8th rounds, Alvarado started to show great resilience and continued to pressure Prescott- with Alvarado’s face battered mouth bloody and eye swollen, Alvarado came out in the 10th and landed numerous uppercuts to the tired Prescott who was leaning heavily on Alvarado. Alvarado caught Prescott with two uppercuts that dropped Prescott, as Prescott got up from a standing eight count, visibly hurt and trying to hold onto the final bell, Alvarado unleashed a few more flush uppercuts that hurt Prescott even more and prompted referee Jay Nady to wisely stop the fight.

Alvarado showed great courage and what many have heard and thought he was; a real “contender” in the 140lb division. However, while Prescott was a solid opponent, his career

has been up and down since his signature knockout against Amir Khan. Alvarado has good power to hurt anyone in his division, but he also is not the most nimble fighter on his feet and that may give him problems when he faces the elite fighters in his division.

Where his career goes from here will be determined by Top Rank and his management team, but Alvarado has earned a shot against some of the bigger names in his division. However, Alvarado may become a gate keep before he ever gets his title shot due to the fact that he has little fan fare behind him along with Timothy Bradley recently signed with Top Rank as well as Brandon Rios perhaps moving up to the 140lb division, Alvarado may be left out. Top Rank may look in house and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Arum pairs Alvarado up with either Bradley or Rios. An Alvarado-Rios fight would create fireworks for however long it would last-a Bradley fight would be a little less thrilling, Bradley has a high work rate and I believe that he would be able to outwork Alvarado over 12 rounds, but just as this past Saturday showed, Alvarado will come to fight.

And then…

Marquez made everyone eat their words (myself included) as he almost beat Pacquiao, the heavy favorite Saturday night. Marquez fought a great fight, but came up short once again. Was it a robbery as many say? No, it was close but Marquez lost by allowing Pac to control the pace of the fight the entire night. Even if Pacquiao was “exposed” by Marquez with his counterpunching, I still want to see Mayweather and Pacquiao. No matter what people want to say, it still is the biggest fight in boxing today and possibly the biggest fight in this era and until they face off in the ring neither man can call themselves pound for pound king.

Which is worse…Mayweather knocking out a defenseless Victor Ortiz, or Marquez losing a second fight with Manny Pacquiao by a Majority Decision this fight and Split Decision in the previous fight.

Good luck and God Bless to my brother in law- He is making a one way trip to the Dominican Republic.

  1. Fight was stop waaaay too soon! Alvarado should thank Presscott for bringing it to him. He started way to slow. The ref stopped this with a tired fighter walking toward him. WHY!?! He should’ve stop it for the cuts and bleeding! I’m not a fan of “Ref stoppages” with less than a minute left in fights! Chavez vs Taylor anyone!

  2. I knew Bradley/Casamayor was a lousy fight since it was announced just a bathroom break or a beer run before the main event. Bradley should look back at the Alvarado/Prescott match to see how to create buzz and excitement. I enjoyed the Alvarado/Prescott fight and both guys earned respect in my book. Alvarado got’s heart and I look forward to seeing him back in the ring. If Alvarado doesn’t earn a championship we’ll at least know he has the heart of a champion and warrior.

  3. I was unimpressed with Bradley, but haven’t been following his other fights. It seemed that the Bradley vs Casamayor fell to the same state as the Donaire vs Navarez. But I agree that it would be a nice match-up.

  4. Alvarado vs Prescott was worth the $59.99 alone. This was a fun fight to watch. Great come back! Much repect for Alvarado.
