WBC President Jose Sulaiman recently stated that Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Sergio Martinez would be allowed voluntary fights. “As per the WBC Rules and Regulations, a voluntary defense has been granted to the new champion [Chavez] to then proceed to fight the WBC Diamond champion Sergio Martinez, who will also make a voluntary defense on October the 15th.

So, whom is Chavez going to fight?

There is talk about an eventual match between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Bob Arum, Chavez promoter is insisted he would make the fight right now if Golden Boy was interested in a co-promotion.

“We’d scrap any plans for Chavez to fight Canelo immediately,” Arum told ESPN.com. “(Trainer) Freddie (Roach) wants that fight, the kid wants that fight, we’re ready. We just need a willingness on Canelo’s part to do it. We’re ready to do that fight. But I don’t think they want the fight.”

Arum said if the match happened it would be at 158lbs. Canelo will move up in weight. Though I doubt the fight will happen, at least this year. Golden Boy, Alvarez’s promoter, is planning a fight for him Sept. 17 as part of a split-site HBO PPV card along with Floyd Mayweather’s return to the ring to challenge welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz.

Arum also is planning Chavez’s next move. He had hoped to have him defend his title Sept. 24 on HBO — before Roach goes to the Philippines to train Manny Pacquiao for his Nov. 12 bout with Juan Manuel Marquez if not Nov 19 will be the date for Chavez to defend.

Who do you think will win Chavez or Canelo?

  1. I think this would be a good and possibly brutal fight. I agree with Jesus that Chaves seems to always be looking to fight smaller fighters, and Canelo shouldnt fight beyond his weight class. Miguel Cotto would be a great opponent for Canelo if he was’nt caught up in the much delayed Cotto vs Margarito. I think it’s only right that Chaves defend his title against the real WBC champ and thats Martinez, plus he’s more his size. Chaves and his ppl are basicly trying to pull off another fruadulant undefeated career, Just like Mayweather. Take the best looking fights without taking any serious risk. In case they did’nt notice even Floyd cant get away with that crap anymore. Sooner or later Chaves is going to have to man up and take on legit opponents.

  2. @ eva,
Martinez would KO Chavez inside of 3 rounds unless he gets on a bike and runs around the ring avoiding Martinez. Even if the fight is made, I think that since Chavez is protected so much that the WBC would find a dispicable way for him to win. Maybe fake a low blow punch and DQ Martinez. Sounds out of whack but with the way Chavez is being protected anything can happen.

  3. @ EZ,
Good call. Chavez wasn’t able to knock out his C- opponents. That much is true. Think about this though, Jose Cotto came very close to stopping Canelo. Imagine what a good punch from Chavez would do ? You have to admit he has more power than Jose Cotto. I guess you just have to land a good punch at the right time and anybody can go down. That’s happened in boxing.

  4. JESUS, I agree with much of your comment but I DON’T believe that Chavez Jr would kayo Canelo. Chavez hasn’t been able to stop C-level fighters like Rowand, Lyell, Duddy, Cuello…, I believe Canelo would’ve knocked them ALL out!! As a matter of FACT young Chavez has only scored ONE kayo in his last EIGHT fights, and that was over an UNKNOWN D-level fighter named Jason LeHoullier, a fighter NOBODY ever heard of until Arum dug him out of out of somewhere in Australia.

Although I believe that a Chavez vs Canelo fight would be a good one, I tend to believe that Canelo would win.

  5. jesus a i ugry with you on that the only one that got close to nocking out canelo was jose miguel cotto canelo has fot beter oponets the cahvez jr as for chavez jr he should fight sergio martinez that would be a very good fight and martinez would beat him up what do you think

  6. Canelo has never fought anyone with any kind of power or anybody willing to actually fight back. I’ve never seen Chavez retreat. Although he’s hasn’t fought anyone either. I think Chavez would bring a body attack that Canelo hasn’t seen. I think he would KO Canelo. I don’t get it though, why would Chavez want to fight smaller men anyway ?? He chose the 160 lbs division so he he should defend his title at that weight vs true middleweights. Canelo needs to defend his 154 lbs title against true, ranked jr middleweights.

  7. canelo would beat him up i hope martinez fights chavez jr martinez would give him a ko that would send him into erly reatirment

  8. Com’on man, today Suliaman will CONVENIENTLY go by the rules HIS WBC rules and then bend, loophole, violate, disregard or resort to ANYTHING that works to HIS/WBC convenience and benefit$. The past is WITNESS and TESTIMONY how he’ll find a ‘reason’ to change mandatories, vacate titles, create NEW titles.. in order to collect the “due$” and or cater to the promoter$. Nothing which is new. His CORRUPT POLICIES are the reason why the WBC went bankrupt years ago and are still paying the imposed $25 million lawsuit in favor of Graciano Rocchigiani, a fighter he tried to screw and eventually SCREWED HIM!! More reason’s for Suliaman to continue to “rape” our sport with continual injustices, in total disregard to the affected fighters and fans. As for the “proposed” Martinez vs Chavez Jr fight… for now FORGET IT. It anit happening.

  9. CANELO SHOULD NOT HAVE TO FIGHT AT 158 LBS. IF ARUM REALLY WANTED THEM TO FIGHT HE WOULD FIGHT AT WELTERWEIGHT OR MIDDLEWEIGHT. BUT HE KNOWS CHAVEZ DOESNT HAVE A CHANCE AT THOSE WEIGHTS.

  10. what a joke ! martinez will destroy the kid OMG hahahahaha good job jose good job he’ll beat canelo but will be a wreck after that one
