Poor Ticket Sales For Timothy Bradley-Devon Alexander

So, recently Michael Marley wrote that a total of 339 tickets have been sold for the match between WBC super lightweight champion Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 KOs) and WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11 KOs) who will collide January 29, at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan considering tickets range from a $25 to $400 ringside and have been on sale since Dec. 10.

Marley goes on to say “Shaw and King did a show on July 11, 2009,in Sunrise, Fl. Fort Lauderdale) where the crowd was announced as over 11,000 but the actual paid ticket count was a sizzling 757? That hot ticket seller had a main event featuring an Aussie of Armenian extraction (Vic Darchinyan) against an African named King Kong Agbeko.”

Not sure how accurate this is as Dan Rafael from ESPN says more than 2,000 have been sold but then again those figures are still very low considering how Timothy Bradley-Devon Alexander claim to be the best and have the nerves to call out big names like Manny Pacquiao. The arena will be curtained off to about 10,000-15,000 capacity and if only 2,000 where sold then…. I don’t know…

Promoters Don King and Gary Shaw ripped into reports about poor ticket sales and have been quoted by Fightnews saying:

Gary Shaw: “I put on the greatest fight in the decade, Corrales-Castillo. We didn’t sell 2,000 tickets. I’ve never heard anyone say that wasn’t a fight that was extraordinary….the fight is bigger than the site!….All you writers have written about how us promoters should get out of the casinos and go out and do something in local areas. Give Don and I some credit for being willing to go into Detroit. Give the owner of the Silverdome the credit for wanting to show off a site that he bought and show that he can do boxing there. I don’t care if we draw 500 people. Give us the credit for going out and doing it. Give the credit to two fighters and two trainers who don’t care where they go!”

I am looking forward to this fight, but it makes me wonder if Timothy Bradley-Devon Alexander can’t sell out would they ever get a shot Manny Pacquiao or any other big name? What’s your opinion?

  1. Just bought my tickets. I could stay at home and watch on tv,but when was the last time there was a fight in the Detroit area? I’ve been to fights in Vegas and years ago in Detroit and in my opinion live boxing is one of the most exciting sporting events you can see in person. The low ticket price made it a no brainer for me.

  2. I’ve dropped $25.00 on dumber things. If HBO brought and televised a championship fight in my town I would support it, in hopes of bringing more exciting match-ups.

  3. Maybe we should start getting some of these good fights on the undercard of the Horrible PPV we’ve been getting as of late!!

  4. I think more people are fine watching this one at home for a lot less money, you know what we typically pay for our premium cable or satellite channels and not to mention cheaper beer. Hell i’m one of them if this fight was going on where Bradley’s fights usually fights at the Aqua Caliente Casino(which I live right down the street from) I wouldn’t cough up $25 to $400 for a seat and not to mention like 3 or 4 bucks a beer. I’m just fine at home watching it on HBO with a 24 pack which costs less for a fight which I’m pretty sure isn’t ending in a K.O. Not to mention neither fighters style thrills me all that much that I feel I have to be there in person. That’s just me though.

  5. The truth is No Matter how great you are… you could be undefeated, but if you cant sell any tickets or PPV no one will care..

Take Paul Williams for example. People say his the most fear boxer because no one wants to fight him…but the truth is he doesn’t sell tickets so no one wants to take a risk.

  6. I wouldn’t pay to see either of these guys…… They are both over rated…. And no they don’t deserve a big fight …. At least not yet….

  7. True boxing fans know that Devon Alexander is over-rated and has no business fighting Tim Bradley. Let’s not blame the economy on this one.
