Julio Cesar Chavez Takes on Alfonso Gomez

One thing that irritates me about boxing is that one day you hear one thing and by tomorrow, its something completely different. For instance, word was that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was going to take on Miguel Cotto on December 4th, then it looked as thought Chavez was going to take on Pawel Wolak as part of the undercard for the pay-per-view Latin Fury and now it appears Alfonso Gomez, the former “Contender” is the front runner for the main event.

Miguel Cotto recently announced he will sit out the rest of 2010 because of lingering effects of his shoulder surgery. It makes you wonder what the hell is Chavez doing. I personally think his trying to take an easy fight as he has done for his entire career.

Gomez is coming off a win over the now retired Jose Luis Castillo. Gomez is currently a 147-pounder and Chavez wants to fight at 154-pounds which will be a 7-pound advantage for Chavez. Chavez is also a harder puncher than Gomez but regardless of the size and weight disadvantages for Gomez, I hope Gomez deflates the overrated Chavez Jr. I don’t think Gomez can knock out Chavez but an upset on points cannot be written off.

Do you think the man from Guadalajara can beat the odds?

  1. LOVE BOXING hmmmm.. Do you remember or are you familiar with the saying, “What’s in a name??” ahhh… There is VIVIAN Harris and CARMEN Basilio. (“Carmen” happens to be my wife’s name) Then there was a popular middleweight of the ’80s called CHRISTY Elliott.

Do you get the picture?? or… do you need me to supply you with more examples. There are many more, I’m sure. Oh, let’s not forget the former head of the Gambino Crime Family CARMAINE Galente. So… what’s wrong with ‘Paula’?? Just asking, dude.

  2. @Paula ,what kind name is that especially in a boxing forum.Do you know boxing Paulita!
Change your pseudonym ,for it sounds very feminine .Make it Paul .
I guess you’re on the wrong forum .This is not a fashion forum paulita .Edgar established this forum for boxing fans only not fashion fans.

  3. Gomez is a game opponent and it seems he always comes prepared to fight but, i just hope he doesnt show to much respect to Chavez Jr. the son of his idol. I remember on the contender how much he praised chavez. It would be a good test for Chavez jr. to see if he can put gomez away as easy as Cotto did. We will see.

  4. Can’t fight cotto, but you can fight gomez. What a joke! I remember any persom named chavez back in the day who fought alot of bums, and as soon as he started fighting the top guys, he didn’t do so good!Yes j.c. jr., keep fighting bums. You’ making good money doing it. I can’t hate on you for that!like papa like son!!!!!!He does know about the mexican vs puerto rican rivalry doesn’t he! I guess i’ll have to wait for marquez to kick lopez’s butt I bet you canelo alvarez wouldn’t be scared of cotto!!!!!

  5. Edgar, I understand where you’re coming from. Now, Cotto WASN’T gonna sit out the remainder of the year IF Chavez Jr was going to comply with the pre-agreement to fight him on December 4th. Chavez Jr pulled out stating that he would need a FULL CAMP (6-8 weeks) with under Freddie Roach in order to face a fighter of Cotto’s caliber, which in turn forced the networks to seek an alternative. The network wasn’t willing to comply with the demand$ of Cotto, who wanted basically the same payday vs Cintron or Martirosyan, he decided to wait til next year. By the way, Cotto himself considers BOTH Cintron and Martirosyan more dangerous and riskier than Chavez, according to his assitant trainer, Joe Santiago told us recently, which it why Miguel wanted basically the same purse. When no financial agreement was reached then cotto opted out and desided to give his shoulder a bit extra rest. But it was perfectly clear and known in all the boxing circles here that Cotto wanted the Chavez fight. Joe said that Miguel was disapponted when Chavez Jr announced the he was pulling out of the fight.

And as I predicted, they, the Chavez team, would turn down the Wolack fight. Knowing Arum, he NEVER really intended to allow Chavez fight Wolack in the first place. Wolack represents too much danger right now. Wolack would’ve beaten down Duddy too, worse than Chavez.

  6. Gomez is a warrior. Better than John Duddy, thats for sure. Chavez will have his hands full.
Why is this the main event though ??

  7. I don’t think Chavez could have taken Cotto or Wolak. He has never impressed me as a fight I don’t hink he can even score a knock out with Gomez. i hope Gomez knocks Chavez punk ass out. He is over rated and can’t live up to his name. His name is what has gotten him here in the first place.
