After landing a career opportunity last year, a fight against Shane Mosley set for January 30th 2010, a devastating earthquake rocked Andre Berto’s native Haiti.
With the fight with Mosley cancelled and far from his mind, the troubles of the past months now may be at least eased when WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over former WBO champ Carlos Quintana (27-3, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.
Carlos Quintana was less aggressive from his last victory fight against Paul Williams, Quintana wanted to bring the fight against the ropes, often tugging and holding. Quintana had a point deducted for a punch to the back of Berto’s head.
Berto was too fast and strong for Quintana. Berto kept his distance and establish himself in the center of the ring. Referee Tommy Kimmons waved it off after a sustained barrage by Berto. Time was 2:16.
The card was billed as “Fighting for Haiti” with a portion of the proceeds from tickets sold going to benefit those affected by the recent earthquake in Berto’s native Haiti.
I think Berto is a great fighter.however,I don’t
think that he has what it takes to be like Floyd and other elite t fighters.
He needs to work on his defense because other fighters will punch him badly .
Time is on Berto’a side. Considering that guys like Floyd, Manny and Mosley are already hinting retirement and Cotto, who’s now campaining as a Jr. Middle and also close to the end of his career, that leaves Berto as the more established talent of the up n’ comers of the welter/jr welter divisions.
How dominant will he be?? hmmm… By the looks of things he and Bradley will eventually meet further down the line if they both remain on top of their respective divisions.
But… for some reason… I don’t expect him to reign for a extended/long period of time.
TIAJUANA Yes, I agree. berto’s defense wasn’t/isn’t all that good. Fortunate for him that he was facing a rather light hitting Quintana, who was scoring OVER 40% of his output and…. it seemed llike Quintana was ahead in “punches landed” up until the final round.
Honestly, even though I predicted a Berto win on this very same boxing site earlier in the week, I thought it would go the full limit and…. I was wrong.

Impressive win for Berto, he still has some issues with his defense, he leaves him self open a lot, his hands are down and there is no head movement whatsoever, still he is young and has much to learn, I see a great future for him if he can learn those things.
He is a hell of a good person outside the ring also, after loosing family members in Haiti he went there and showed he is not only a good athlete but a great human being.
