As the WBC #1 ranked lightweight Antonio DeMarco (record) winds down his training camp for his next bout on Saturday, October 31st, versus Jose Alfaro (23-4, 20KO) for the interim WBC lightweight belt from Las Vegas, NV, he looks back at the last eight weeks of his life.
“The pressure has been tough, my trainer Don Romulo Quirarte frequently has stopped me and told me how to do things right,” DeMarco states after one grueling session. “He always asks for more even if we do it right but that is what we need as fighters to do our job.”
“Sometimes it seems that I can’t get up in the morning to go run or to come to the gym but right now, the words ‘I can’t’ do not fit in my vacabulary so I erase them and go on with my business.”
As far Quirarte, he feels that they have done enough to go after Alfaro, a former lightweight champion, even though they have not changed much in the gym expect to work even harder.

“We have not worked any different for Alfaro. I think taht DeMarco has improved in every one of his fights but every fight is different,” Quirarte says. “I think that DeMarco has fought and beaten tougher fighters like ‘Kid Diamond’ who had a more impressive record and nobody thought that we going to beat him.”As most fighters, DeMarco does not claim to look ahead of his upcoming challenge against Alfaro but he has dreamed of what it would feel like to strap the WBC belt around his waist.
“Yes, I have thought about it. It is something that I can’t imagine. I just know that I am going to be fighting for a world title adn I think it would be the greatest thing that I can give to the people, to the people that have believed in me,” DeMarco says with a smile. “This project has nine years in the making, I got to Tijuana when I was fourteen years old. I couldn’t begin to name all the people that have helped me since I got here, that have given me a plate of food or a roof over my head. I want those people to be happy, my wife, my daughter, my parents, my team. It is my dream for them to be happy and with that I will be happy.”
