For a young boxer with only 15 fights and a total of just 52 rounds of experience, Angulo (15-0, 12 KOs) has been matched very tough in his recent bouts. Undoubtedly that mindset comes from years of sparring with Antonio Margarito. Angulo was the main sparring partner for the Tijuana Tornado and their sessions have been proverbial gym wars.
A rising star with a crowd-pleasing style, Angulo is intense and aggressive and perhaps even a little more of a complete fighter, having been an Olympian for his native Mexico.
Angulo has certainly looked like a contender close to a championship fight in his last two bouts and now the undefeated junior middleweight will face former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron on May 30th.
MyBoxingFans had the pleasure of speaking exclusively to the young star.
First of all thank you for taking the time to talk to us, can you tell me your thoughts about Kermit Cintron? We know Antonio Margarito is the only one who has beaten him.
“I know he’s a good fighter, like you said Margarito is the only one who beat him twice. His defiantly a challenge for me and I am ready for him.”
Do you think Cintron will be your most difficult opponent you have ever faced?
“I don’t wan to say that, I have fought some very though guys before, but I think this will defiantly open more doors for me, Cintron is a well known boxer.”
Do you know where the fight will take place?
“I know it’s in Las Vegas and I am not sure of which casino.”
How’s your training going so far?
“I just started training about two weeks ago and I am so happy to be back in the gym, I took a break because of the cut I had over my eye.”
The fight with Cosme Rivera was some thing else, how many stitches?
“In Florida they tried to close the cut, but I had plastic surgery when I came to Los Angeles, the surgeon did a wonderful job.”

Boxers like Alfredo Angulo is why I love boxing, Angulo with only 15 professional fights will fight anyone regardless of the risk. Many promoters and boxers will not take that type of risk because you’re just starting off. I am not going to say any names, ok I lied but Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. should learn from guys like Angulo. I could almost guarantee people will rather see Alfredo Angulo fight than Chavez Jr. and the sad part is that Angulo has less than 20 fights and Chavez has 38 and has not fought any worthy opponents. This just proves who is willing to be some one in life than being pampered by their last name.

I had the Pleasure of Alfredo come to my home town this week and he was an awesome dude. He is very tough and he will win the fight against Cintron.. He will be knocked out in 3 to 4 Rounds. I got to meet the next champion and I am for Team Angulo…

Cintron will get KO in the 6th round, he’ll try to exchange with Angulo but he won’t match up to his power shots

Nice article Edgar– very fair and objective analysis of the upcoming proposed bout.
Personally, I ‘d prefer to see Kerm continue in 147 if he’s not having trouble making the weight– and it seemed as if he was headed in that direction in trying to seek out a Cotto all-Puerto Rico match up which HBO apparently nixed. And honestly, along those lines I was hoping for a Cintron/Soto-Karass (I think that match up would be awesome– and also have certain Margarito undertones) or a Delvin Rodriguez bout at 147– or maybe a tune up against a lesser known at 154 where he can notch an “impressive” looking W/KO before taking on another top flight match up like Angulo. But, if he’s gonna continue to explore 154, and wants to continue fighting the best opponents outs there, this bout should be far more entertaining to watch than the V-tine day’s clash of styles with Martinez.
Only have seen the one Angulo bout on that same card– and he looked pretty impressive. Not quite sure he’s at Margarito’s level yet, of course– and this bout makes a lot of sense for him in terms of trying to establish where he stands at present. By contrast, I’m not sure what this bout does for Kerm’s future trajectory long term regardless of its outcome. (Will he be a headliner at 154 with an impressive W? Will he head back to 147 if things don’t work out?). But, I’m sure its a pretty good paycheck–so I can’t begrudge him that in this day and age. And, once again, Kerm is trying to step up and fight the best possible opponent and deserves some props for that too.
The Angulo/Margarito comparisons are intriqueing, and lead me to three questions the answers for which will likely determine the fights outcome: (1) does Angulo have Tony’s granite chin (will Kerm get discouraged if he lands the big right without much impact?), (2) will Kerm have the same “just try to outbang” him gameplan that he tried in the second fight against Tony (and which in the end of course didn’t work– but was to be fair a considerable improvement from the first fight and he was still firing up to the end), (3) has Kerm’s ability to handle an big physical opponent applying continual pressure improved under Ronnie Shields? I’m of course leaning towards Hangman’s conclusions— but I recognize that I have an inherent pro-Cintron bias.
Cintron looked bad in his last fight , I really think Angulo is going to destroy him, it will go into the late rounds but Angulo will win by KO, even better, this can be Margarito – Cintron 3 in a way, can’t wait to see this one.
As far as Chavez Jr, it’s simple Edgar, you can’t compare talent, Angulo is a very talented fighter and his making a name for him self, Chavez Jr. has the name but lacks the raw talent, shore he’s not horrible but no one can compare the talent of both fighters.
In a weird way Chavez has more to lose (his father reputation) in the other hand Angulo is making one, a very good one.

dont get me wrong. Cintron is an awesome fighter, I think the one who is more willing will win MAy 30 th.
I’ve been impressed by Angulo but fear he may be in over his head with Cintron. Angulo is tough but to me has looked slow and vulnerable. While Cintron hasn’t looked fantastic in his last few fights, I think he’ll prove to be too much for Angulo. Despite what others seem to think, I see improvement in Cintron and when it all comes together- you better look out. Predicting Cintron KO round 5!
