The Oscar goes to Manny!

To begin, the Oscar De La Hoya era is over “officially”.  He knows it and now the world does too.  It was a hall of fame career that I feel will be defined by 3 fights.  Unfortunately, the three fights are all loses for him, Trinidad, Mayweather Jr. and now Pacquiao.  The sport has truly changed guards and now it is PacMan time and a fresh start for a sport long needing one.  However, before that guard changed we did get a LOUSY PPV last night. That undercard was embarrassing not only for HBO but Golden Boy too.  How can you charge consumers $55 for the three garbage undercard fights we saw last night?  This is not the first time Golden Boy has done this too.  The PPV format is simple and last night got only one part right.  My formula for PPV’s is 4 fights featuring 1 up and comer and 3 meaningful fights with at least 1 belt on the line.  We got Jacobs in the first fight and he destroyed his opponent.  Ok, Jacobs is young and he needs to be brought up slowly so I give a pass on that one.  The Juanma Lopez fight was a joke and never should have been made.  What happened to matchmaking, is it a lost art?  I doubt it, everyone knew this would be a blow out and it prompts several questions.  One, how much more do we need to see from Lopez?  He is there folks; it is time for big fights.  Second, why bring in a guy who no one knows and has never competed on that type of stage before?  Why do it to us?  Juanma needs big fights and second up on a PPV is not the place for him now.  Ditto Ortiz, come on, we have been hearing about him for years now lets see what he has?  Hey, if you want to keep bringing these guys along slow then fine, but don’t do it on the most expensive PPV of the year with the world watching.  How much space did HBO have to fill last night, it felt like half the show?  The sum total of the undercard amounted to about 4-5 rounds and zero drama.  That is not good for the sport or its fans that seem to get kicked in the face by promoters on a monthly basis.

Off the soapbox, Manny Pacquiao is a beast.  Who can handle that combination of speed and power and his defense is not that bad either.   He is the pound for pound king and he is a more than worthy recipient of the title.  Manny really did not lose a round in the fight and made Oscar look as bad as anyone could imagine.  I am sure the loss will haunt Oscar for a long time but really he was never meant to fight this long and should have left more in the ring when he was younger.   I think the Trinidad fight was a tougher loss as he gave that one away in his prime.  Last night was more about Manny than how far Oscar has fallen.  Manny did exactly what he had to do and did it almost perfectly.  There really was a big size difference but Manny showed no intimidation and handled everything with confidence and precision.  How about the speed too?  If Hatton is next I certainly favor Manny.  You would assume that weighing 142 for this fight he could easily meet Hatton at 140 and again Manny would come in a bigger man than his foe.  So much for all that talk about moving up in weight classes.  It will be interesting to see if other fighters attempt do what Manny and Paul Williams have done recently but I feel only a few gifted and well trained boxers can do it successfully.  I already read one site asking for Manny/Margarito!  It is hard to put anything past Manny at this point.

  1. Maybe Oscar knows something we don’t and he’s pull the ultimate con job on us , maybe he had some one known only to him and a few of his close relatives ,place a large bet on Paquiao to win ,there for quadrupiling his winnings, I mean why not lately he seems to be with out shame in screw any body, he’s made it quite clear that he wants to be the first billionaire boxer, who knows to what he will resort to accomplish such a selfish goal..

  2. i see someone stuck in the “real warrior schtick when comparing Oscar and JCC.

I wish the fans would just get over it. Of course JCC was a great warrior, but Oscar has been carrying Boxing for a number of years now and he should get respect. I’m sure he “wanted” to fight, but everytime he thought about throwing a punch, he got hit by four.

I thought Oscar would beat Manny…I was wrong and hopefully Oscar will never fight again. That one was very painful to watch. It was like watching Sugar Ray Leonard vs Hector Camacho in 1997

  3. Bad loss for sure but DLH did a lot for the sport and made a lot of people money. It is time for him to move on but one hell of a career and a sure spot in the HOF. Love him or hate him we all watched and he did his part to entertain. The resume is insane, Whitaker, Hopkins, Pacquaio, Chavez Sr., Mayweather Jr., Mosely, Trinidad, etc. As a promotor he has not done it yet but I hope he focuses on it and makes great fights.

  4. To me, it was a SELL OUT……………

    FIXED…. FIXED….. FIXED!!!!!!!

I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts promoting Manny!!!

  5. This was the nightmare match for de la hoya I think all about money mexican fighters Dont go down like that. maybe he should fight Arce next maybe He will win that fight .If real mexicans from mexico din`t like him his worse shape know.any fight with de la hoya I WILL NOT WATCH 90%OF THE FANS AT THE MGM WERE WITH PACMAN.HE NEEDS MOVE TO PUERTO RICO AND STAY THERE.IT`S SHAME. OSCAR DE LA HOYA IS NOT FOR THE MEXICAN BOXING FANS HES FOR BUCK .I HOPE HE STAYS OUT OF THE RING FOR GOOD.WHAT DREAM MATCH IT WAS THE NIGHTMARE MATCH.YOUR THE BEST PACMAN.

  6. Oscar was clearly puzzled by Manny’s speed – hand speed, footwork, head movement. You can see his frustration in the early rounds. This is also evident in Larios and Berrera’s face when they first fought. The difference is that Oscar did not fight back. Not at all especially in round 7 and 8. Virtually, there’s no punch from him. If there’s something I have to question, it’s his courage. He doesn’t have that aura the moment he entered the ring.

  7. i think manny deserves the pound for pound but the only fight that could pull me back to boxing over ufc is pac vs the pretty boy the stalker against the craftsman what wins mind over matter lets see

  8. i think there was seriously something wrong with this fight.. how does the naturally bigger guy come into the fight weighing less then the smaller one .. personally i think oscar over trained and left all his abilitys in training if anyone saw that fight u would think what a sell out.. but i think he was just to weak due to the weight loss. look at the way he was jabbing no snap no strength in it..

  9. Well this tells me that Eric Morales could have beat up Oscar easily lol.
I still can’t believe Oscar didn’t even try to fight, that to me is kinda weird, at least try to trow punches try to do something, he lost that fight the minute round one ended.

Maybe is Karma for what he did to Chavez, but at least Chavez fought until the end, like a real warrior, sad to see a once great boxer not even try to win, very sad indeed.

  10. This was the worst PPV I have seen, I wanted more action from all of the fighters. I would of hoped for the fights to last longer. What a terrible fight for Oscar, he knew after the first round that he was going to loose. Now maybe they can schedule Margarito and Pacman. I hope they dont make the Hatton v.s Pacman, Ricky is not going to win! What a show, poor Oscar sorry buddy its time for your retirement. Actually he should of never came back. They dont know when to stop.Like they said Barrera and Marquez fought way better than Oscar did, they put a lot more effort and heart into the fight. What a shame!
