In a bout for the WBC interim super welterweight championship, Sergio Martinez (44-1-1, 24 KOs) totally outclassed Alex Bunema (30-6-2, 16 KOs) on Saturday night at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. Martinez was in command from the opening bell and the one-sided bout was finally stopped at the end of the eighth round.
In a dogfight between two guys known for their aggressive style, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo out-powered Russia’s Andrey Tsurkan for a technical knockout. The fight was a co-feature on HBO’s Boxing After Dark program.
Tsurkan came aggressive from the opening bell swinging away, Angulo trying to take control of the fight by landing his right jabs but the Russian kept pursuing the action.
Alfredo Angulo being Antonio Margarito’s sparring partner taught him one thing to be tough and not to give up.
“That was the toughest fight of my career,” said Angulo, who suffered a cut over his right eye in the second round. “It got tougher in each round.”
Angulo (14-0, 11 KOs) started to land some heavy solid combinations, attacking the body and switching from a right-handed stance to a left-handed stance. It was defiantly in action pack fight with the crowed at the edge of their seats.
Angulo’s toughest punches seemed to affect Tsurkan (26-4, 17 KOs) silencing his fans but the Russian boxer who lives in Brooklyn refused to wilt despite the drubbing and despite blood dripping from Angulo’s right eye. Tsurkan couldn’t find the punch that could keep the Mexican fighter from attacking at will. Tsurkan legs looked like noodles.
The slug fest lasted nearly 10 full rounds after repeated punches sustained by Tsurkan in the 10th round, his corner threw the white towel at 2:27 of the round to signal the referee to halt to the brutal affair.
I could honestly say this was an awesome fight and I defiantly tip my hat for this though Russian. During the post fight conference Angulo said he’d like a fight with undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. but I doubt Chavez Jr. will accept his offer.
World rated featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa (12-0, 10 KOs) recovered from a first round knockdown to knock out previously unbeaten Marcos Ramirez (25-1, 16 KOs) in round two. Gamboa was floored by an elbow in round one, but unleashed a ferocious attack in round two to drop Ramirez twice in the second. Time was 1:41.
Jesse Vargas (2-0) promoted by Mayweather Promotions showed being trained by the Mayweather family pays off. Vargas was in command against a much taller Trenton Titsworth (2-3) landing several upper cuts and 1-2 combinations. We have seen strange things in boxing, Mike Tyson biting Evader Holyfield’s ear but tonight it was more emotional Jesse Vargas was kissed on the ear and licked on the face by Titsworth.
Vargas took offense at the smooch and punched Titsworth as the referee broke up the hugging sending Titsworth to the canvas. Referee David Denkin deducted one point from Vargas and two from Titsworth for holding behind the head and another for the complete lack of professionalism. Vargas won by unanimous decision 39-34 in the junior welterweight bout.
Argentina’s Carlos Abregu (24-0, 21 KOs) stopped Robert Valenzuela (40-29, 4 KOs) from Sonora, Mexico at 54 seconds of the sixth and final round of a welterweight contest. Abregu dominated the entire bout with his jab forcing his opponent to step back not allowing Valenzuela to land a telling blow. Abregu recently signed by Gary Shaw Productions proved he is a worthy boxer.
In a Super Middleweight bout Arkansa’s Jon Nelson (6-0) landed some great over hand rights and upper cuts during the first round taking a unanimous decision over Florida’s Robert Campbell (2-1), being Campbell’s third fight showed he was not comfortable exchanging punches and played defense thru the scheduled six. Nelson’s speed and slight better ring experience made the difference. The judges scored it 60-54 for Nelson.
Ariz Ambriz (6-0, 4 KOs) from Azusa was in command for all 4 rounds, Dion Nash (5-4) was getting frustrated and was looking for the knock out but didn’t come thru, Ambriz speed and accuracy was enough to convince the judges. The judges scored it 40-36 for Ambriz.
In the final bout of the night, an exciting welterweight bout between Escondido’s Dashon Johnson and Azusa’s Alan Velasco started the bout like a street brawl both fighters exchanging wild punches while dancing all over the ring. Despite two knockdowns scored by Johnson in the second round, Velasco rallied in the last four rounds to tighten up the fight. Judge Marty Denkin scored it 57-55 for Velasco and judges Tony Crebs and David Denkin scored it 56-56 ending the street braw in a majority draw.

Rocio, me felicitas a Alfredo, dio una pelea exelente. Que siga adelante con la misma determinacion, tiene un futuro brillante, fue la primera vez que lo vi pelear y no me perdere sus peleas de ahora en adelante.
WOW!!! Estas peleas estubieron muy buenas e interesantes, realmente estoy super contenta y orgullosa de mi hermano Alfredo El “Perro” Angulo ya que hizo una excelente de mostración de boxeo. Y para todos aquellos que dudaban y decian que El “Perro” no podía mas de 5 rouds, aqui dio una muy buena demostración de que puede con 5 y con mas porque para eso mi hermano se prepara muchisimo antes de cada convate… Muchisimas felicidades a todos los que ganaron esa noche y sobretodo a Alfredo.
Damn those were some great fights, I forgot about the PPV and did not regret it. I also regret not going to this event, great post Edgar and good pictures too.
