Barrera (63-6, 42 KOs), who signed with Golden Boy back in 2003 and was made a partner in the firm, lost both of his fights last year to Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Many thought the losses meant the end of his career and the former junior lightweight, featherweight and junior featherweight world champion retired. But it didn’t last. Not long after the loss to Pacquiao, Barrera said he would return. However, he was unhappy with Golden Boy’s lack of attention to his career. In mid-July, Golden Boy released Barrera from his contract and they announced an amicable split.

According to media in Mexico, former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera has signed a five-year promotional agreement last Tuesday night at King’s Deerfield Beach, Fla., offices, according to two sources with knowledge of the deal, which has not been announced.

Rumors has it that Barrera will fight in Nov. 7 under Don King in Chengdu, China, where King is promoting a card in conjunction with the annual WBC convention.

Barrera plans to move up to the lightweight division, where he has talked about his desire to win another world title. One of his goals has been to become the first Mexican to win titles in four divisions. He is tied with fierce rival Erik Morales and icon Julio Cesar Chavez with titles in three divisions.

  1. The massacre has tarted already, maybe you missed last weekend fight but that was the beginning of the end, should have been the end of the end, but he was already blaming the blood for his lost, oh well, another Don King Victim.

  2. So Sad.

I have seen Marco Antonio Barrera in his last several fights and he is finished as a fighter. Especially since he fights in lighter weight classes, the loss of speed will continue to be a greater and greater factor.

Barrera has reached that point in a veteran boxer’s life where he KNOWS that he wants to do, SEES the opening, but he can’t “pull the trigger” on his punches nor get out of the way of punches.

What is particularly sad for this great warrior is that he has signed with Don King, who will strip away anything Barrera has left and will leave him damaged physically, emotionally and financially.

King could care less about what happens to Barrera, as long as he can make a few bucks on him.

Obviously Barrera’s ego is greater than any sense that he has and King is a master at manipulating fighters by playing to their egos.

This also means that any handlers or true friends of Barrera, who can talk some sense into him will be removed from his life by King.

As a boxing fan, I don’t want to watch the massacre of one of the greatest fighters of his generation.

  3. You have to be kidding me, come on guys, you’ve done it all already, don’t need 1 more title! you need to learn to retire and stay retire.

Barrera looked so slow on the last 2 fights, I don’t even see the point of trying to keep fighting, what for? to get injure? you can even enjoy the money if you are not healthy.

Sam thing with Eric Morales, I’m hearing straight from his mouth that he wants to fight soon, now I have a lot of respect for Eric and what he has done for boxing and for his fans, but you get to a point when you have to think about your future, both this guys have been on wars inside the ring (and outside 2) I think Morales gave more that he should have fighting back to back wars with practically no rest.

So my point is, boxers should be realistic, everything that starts has to end, you can’t keep performing forever and we all know that Don King doesn’t give a crap about his fighters, he will squeeze every single cent and out of a boxer until they are to old and to broke to keep on going.

If Barrera indeed starts fighting again he will fight a few “punching bags” and then maybe get a title fight that he will probably lose. Then he’ll call it quits for good.
