It never fails to run into a casual boxing fan that thinks “Canelo” is the best pound for pound. They will also argue that “Canelo” is more popular than Juan Manuel Marquez.

Who’s a better fighter?

Let’s break it down. Who has a better resume?

“Canelo” made his pro debut in October, 2005, and has fought 43 opponents. His last 5 was Austin Trout, Josesito Lopez, Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron and Alfonso Gomez.

Let’s keep it real, they all suck. Mosley is passed his prime. The only semi worthy is probably Austin Trout but before his victory over Miguel Cotto, no one knew Trout.

Marquez made his pro debut in 1993 and has fought more than 62 fighters. His last few opponents where Manny Pacquiao, Serhiy Fedchenko, Likar Ramos, Michael Katsidis, Juan Diaz and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Just with Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather under his belt, you have to agree that Marquez has a better resume.

Who has a generated more Pay-per-view buys?

Let’s start with Juan Manuel Marquez. His fight with Floyd Mayweather generated $52 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue plus $6,811,300, generated from 12,009 tickets sold.

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez IV generated a live gate total of $10,888,890 and about 1.15 million PPV buys. Pacquiao-Marquez 4 generated at least $70 million in revenue, matching the PPV sales of the third edition which chalked up sales of $1.3 million but cost $5 less.

I could keep going but I think you get the idea that Marquez can sell.

Now let’s see how many Pay-Per-View buys “Canelo” has?

Oh wait…“Canelo” has never headlined his own PPV. Marquez definitely wins this one.

So how can “Canelo” be so popular? I don’t think looking like Carrot Head edges his popularity. One word “Televisa”, the Mexican television network. In Mexico Televisa is the number 1 TV network that basically controls the country.

Televisa has been featuring most of “Canelo” fights and has been featured in many commercials. Just think of it this way… It’s like NBC always showing Adrien Broner in all kinds of commercials. He would be more popular than Floyd.

Marquez didn’t get that exposure. Marquez was aired more in TV Azteca which is the second largest TV network in Mexico but many TV networks didn’t want to air Marquez due to his political views. If you recall because of Marquez a local Mexican election was redone because Marquez was wearing the emblem of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI on his trunks during his 3rd fight with Pacquiao.

You have to give credit to Marquez for standing up for what he believes. At 23-years-old Alvarez can care less about politics.

Conclusion

If it wasn’t for Televisa “Canelo” wouldn’t be as popular as he is now. “Canelo” is definitely in the right path of accomplishing what Marquez has accomplished but for us hardcore boxing fans Marquez is more popular than “Canelo”. For the casual boxing fan “Canelo” will always be their favorite no matter what you say we hardcore boxing fans will always be wrong according to them.

  1. Well Edgar,
I doubt unless CBS changes their minds and puts showtime back on the air ,no one is going to see this fight unless it is at the arena.
I am happy to see so many know so much about boxing, guess my 55 years of watching most every boxing event ever doesnt count for much, with that said, please keep up the doubting, and money hype ,the odds are getting better and better for me to win ,my ticket prices and trip cost back 5 times over.
I would love to see this fight ,fought in a phone booth so maypop has no place to run.
anyway guys ,keep up the maypop hype ,and make my pockets much heavier that nite ,I will thank all of you in advance.

  2. If Canelo would have fought a worthy opponent he too will have big PPV numbers but obviously he hasn’t face anyone that can generate those numbers.

  3. I agree with the assessment and Marquez does have the BETTER resume. But let’s be clear about something… the PPVs that Marquez has sold is because of the opponent also. They are a big factor. He can not do the same numbers without Pacquiao and Mayweather. I think Canelo is very popular among casual fans and watch his fights because it’s the “thing to do” when he fights. I agree Televisa and Golden Boy have done a great job of promoting and hyping this kid. On the other hand, hard core fans know the truth. Just think, Canelo will earn the biggest paycheck of his career without having to defend his title vs the top guys in his division. This fight is a win-win for him. He has nothing to lose.

  4. And he will lose to mayweather to ….Canelo is a product of GBP hyping him up ! Let’s face it he hasn’t fought a real top 10 world class fighter in his prime yet !
