“He can’t he continue..can he continue, yes or no?”
-Referee Benjy Estevez

Trainer Robert Garcia pauses for a moment then responds

“It was a headbutt, we go to the scorecards, yeah”

And just like that the fight was called due to an accidental headbutt that caused a broken nose to Mikey Garcia winning via a technical decision on Saturday night at the Theatre in New York City’s Madison Square Garden taking the WBO world featherweight title. Mikey dropped Salido twice in round one and again in rounds three and four. Scores were 79-70, 79-69, 79-69 for Garcia.

Garcia was easily beating Salido when their heads clashed in the final 20 seconds of the 8th round. It automatically caused discomfort for Garcia that when he sat back down his brother and trainer responded with “oh sh*t, that was a headbutt right?” It immediately cause his corner to call the doctor to see if Mikey could continue or not. In the end Robert Garcia made the best decision to stop the fight knowing that his fighter was ahead on the scorecards.

While it’s Garcia’s right to call the fight due to the fact it was ruled an accidental headbutt, what seems most surprising is that while Garcia may be liked more so than other fighters, he is not getting any negative publicity for quitting. It is hard to argue that Robert was looking out for his brother and fighters best interest; it is a little surprising that fight fans are not a lGarcia_Salido_130119_006aittle more outraged than how they were when Victor Ortiz calling his last fight off when his jaw was broken against Josito Lopez.

Perhaps fans are content with Garcia’s effort, he was dominate and most likely would have ended up winning had it went the distance, as opposed to Ortiz, he was in a brawl, a fight that was back and forth to end by the fighter himself and not a cornerman is unacceptable.

However what the win by a stoppage of a broken nose, it shows that fight fans are fickle; Ortiz stops his fight because his jaw is broken, he is a pus$y. Garcia’s fight is called due to an accidental headbutt and little to no outrage, let alone anyone calling Garcia a quitter. or trainer Robert out for not allowing his fighter to go on.

It just goes to show that fans are willing to accept a stoppage if they like you or don’t think your a fake. How can you not love boxing fans?

  1. Criticism of the Garcias for stopping the fight is ridiculous. Another head-butt or even a solid punch on a nose broken that badly could force the shattered bone up into the fighter’s sinus–or even do brain damage. Mikey was by far the superior boxer, and was probably on his way to a stoppage win. Plus, the butt did not appear to me to be “unintentional.”

  2. Its the job of the newcomer to win the belt with any obstacle. Salido won it and defended it in the rematch at PR with all obstacles against him if it Went to descision. It should be fare to at least give him the rematch.
And now NY its looking like PR robbing the fights out of foreigners, and by that im talking about the burgos fight.

  3. Did they stopped the fight when margarito had his eye socket broken?
Did the ref stopped the fight when valero fought demarco and had a cut on his head with his skull visible?
There were still four more rounds to go and i think they should have let the fight go, maybe take a point of salido for coming in a little wild. But but not take away his chance to defend his belt.
