There is a famous quote that states, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, is a fighter that has taken the motto to heart. Anyone that has followed Guerrero on twitter has seen Guerrero call out every fighter under the sun, from the obvious names, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather to Adrien Broner to Miguel Cotto. His persistence has finally paid off as it has been announced that Guerrero will face Andre Berto on November 24 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
Guerrero who is a good fighter has been looking for a marquee fight to thrust him into the mainstream boxing world; while Pacquiao and Mayweather may not be possible, a dominating win over a dangerous opponent like Berto and just as Victor Ortiz parlayed his win over Berto into a fight with Mayweather, Guerrero hopes to do the same.
However, Berto is no over the hill Joel Casamayor or a shop worn Michael Katsidis, furthermore Berto is a full-fledged welterweight. A weight that Guerrero has just stepped up to and with only one fight under his belt at the welterweight division, Berto is a very high jump up in competition.
Guerrero is catching Berto at the right time, it will be 14 months since the last time Berto was in the ring, a fight he was only in for 5 rounds before the fight was stopped, how sharp and in shape will Berto be when he enters the ring will be the big question. Berto is also coming into the fight after suffering an injured bicep. It’s highly unlikely Guerrero has the power to stop Berto but he does have the work rate and and willingness to stand and engage with Berto. It may work in his favor heading into the late rounds.
Berto is as good a test as you can get when it comes to stepping up, Berto is not one to over look, he has the power that will test Guerrero’s chin and Berto has been in with better competition.
Guerrero asked for a big fight and Berto answered the call. The question will be the Nov. 24th, is he ready to take on the best?
