Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez pose during a press conference Tuesday in front of the Museo De Vida Silvestre (Museum of Wildlife) to announce their upcoming WBO World Featherweight title rematch, March 10 from San Juan,Puerto Rico and televised on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing.
Lopez (31-1, 28 KOs) was a heavy favorite the first time he met Salido on Showtime. One of boxing’s rising stars, Lopez was moving up the pound-for-pound list and headed to a unification showdown with Yuriorkis Gamboa when he faced the rugged Salido, who had given Gamboa a very tough fight in a decision loss in his previous bout, on April 16 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
The rematch has been on the drawing board since immediately after the first fight. But Salido, 31, wanted an interim fight, and Lopez needed time to collect himself after the loss.
“I expect a very different fight. I know he will be better then last time,” Salido said. “I want to show that my first win was not a fluke. I came back to fight in Puerto Rico because he gave me the opportunity to fight for a world championship here and I have never had any problem winning on an opponent’s home base.”
The telecast will open with undefeated #1 featherweight contender Mikey Garcia (27-0, 23 KOs), from Oxnard, Calif., risking record and rating as well as his impending world title shot in a 10-round featherweight battle.

@ Jesus, solid list man I cannot disagree with your picks I have great admiration for PR fighters. A few other fighters I’d say who were great in their own right: Esteban DeJesus, Wilfredo Vasquez Sr. and Jose Basora (no particular order but are worth mentioning as great PR fighters)

He seems to be emplying that there would be more puerto rican champs if they weren’t fighting guy on roids and that they wouldnt have that problem if they were testing like Mayweather does. @ Dennis, if I’m understanding this correctly you’re saying that Puerto Rican fighters only lose because the other fighters are on steroids. Otherwise there would be many more Puerto Rican champions if only they demanded Olympic style blood testing? That is quite a claim to make if I indeed read what you wrote correctly. I’d say that is more sour grapes than a real possibilty. I’m gonna take a wild guess here and say you are of Puerto Rican descent which is why you are making such a biased argument. If thats not what you meant I do apologize, if I did read right I’d suggest you dont make claims that you have no concrete evidence to support the claim you are making. There have been great Puerto Rican champs and there will continue to be more but dont make excuses for the fights they lose.

I see what yours saying and I’m with you on that blood testing should be done if its not being done currently to make sure that fighters are not using that garbage, but what Mayweather does is a little extreme as far time constraints. What I dont see is who are the 10 possible puertorican champions and what is it you think Puerto Rico does or doesnt do compared to what? As far as I know Puerto Rico does as is done here so in that case you should just say boxing in general. You have to be specific when you say Rico or Ricans, because when you say Ricans it sounds like your saying that Ricans in general should do as Mayweather does which I think is going overboard. Yeah EZ E I got the same impression from the Mtagwa fight and the first fight with Salido, I think JML either underestimated his opponent or overestimated himself. He ran out of gas in both fights; lost to Salido and almost got knocked out by Mtagawa. JML has to train harder and fight smarter.

@Edgar: Well, the MAIN reason why it’s being held in Puerto Rico is because it’s where Salido will make the MOST money. That’s the MAIN reason why most lower weight Mexican champs fight or defend their titles on foreign soil, it’s busine$$. Two time champ Hugo Cazares himself admitted that he defended his title 3 times and fought a total of SIX times in Puerto Rico besides FOUR times in Japan was because that’s where the money was at, stating that the purse offers were considerably smaller at home. Other Mexican fighters have expressed the same, especially in the low weight divisions. Salido will receive the LARGEST purse of his career, more than what he made vs Gamboa. Let’s face it, Salido will not be champ for an extended length of time, he’s not that talented. Let’s not forget that he came close to being knocked out in his last fight. Why risk losing it all for a relatively small purse?? It’s a $mart busine$$ move by Salido, besides the fact that he already defeated Juanma the first time, BY KAYO, and has the confidence that he can do it…. AGAIN!! Many fans also believe that he can repeat as well. It should be interesting.
I was at the weigh-in for their fight last year. The following day I was amazed on how big and strong the re-hydrated Salido looked as they stood in the center ring. Juanma will have his hands full with Salido once more. Orlando was tough and sturdy and withstood Juanma’s best punches. Juanma made the same mistake he made with Mtagwa, believing he has the power to knock anyone out, evidently he doesn’t, gassed out and Salido took over. Fighters like Mtagwa and Salido aren’t elite fighters but have strong enough resistant chins to handle Juanma’s power and fire back at the defensively deficient, short winded and weak chinned Lopez. It’s no secret that he struggled to make the weight but it’s his fault if he didn’t put in the necessary gym and diet correctly.

It’s about time, I don’t know why they are doing it in Puerto Rico again. Lopez is not the champ anymore but kudos to Salido for taking the fight there again. I am hoping Salido takes it again. The first fight was great so hopefully this will be much of the same, Garcia is the opener and he’s always entertaining hopefully he gets a step up in competition.
