You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide, Chavez Jr.

chavez-vs-caneloThis passed weekend, the World Boxing Council (WBC) hosted their 49th World Convention at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and for the first time Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was face to face with Canelo Alvarez. I bet you it was an awkward moment for Chavez considering he was on video saying Canelo was afraid of him.

Though we might never see them in the same ring, well at least for now, I give props to Oscar De La Hoya who has been posting pictures of them together on Twitter and saying he wants this fight to happen.

Yesterday, the World Boxing Council ruled that the so-called middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KOs) will have to defend his belt against Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KOs).

Its funny how some boxers will say “Its up to my promoter” when asked if they will fight a worthy opponent but now that Chavez Jr. is being forced to fight Martinez, Chavez is starting to calls out other boxers.

Chavez Jr stated he will now take on Marco Antonio Rubio who is the official challenger but the representatives of Martinez urged the WBC to stop over protecting the Sinaloa fighter and order Chavez-Martinez.

If you recall, we posted a video of Chavez Jr calling out Miguel Cotto. At first I thought Chavez grew some balls overnight but it all makes sense now, he’s trying to avoid Martinez. One source indicated the possibility that Chavez Jr could vacate his WBC middleweight crown in the search for a match against WBA super welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto.

What ever the case may be, I just hope to see Chavez Jr. fight Martinez, Rubio or Cotto.

  1. Rubio should get the tittle shot first because he’s the official challenger. Then Martinez gets the tittle shot. IF Chavez Jr. beats both Rubio and Martinez? How about Chavez Jr. vs. Paul Williams?

  2. I agree with you magic man.
Martinez was exposed on his last fight. It’s just a matter of time until a trainer reviews the replay.

  3. Rubio is the mandatory challenger, sorry Martinez. We know how you feel. If I had my way Martinez would fight Chavez next though. The coroner should be on standby just in case…

  4. LOL, Great article Edgar. Too bad Yellow-Belly Chavez will vacate his title because he wants no part of Martinez. I’d like to see Rubio get his shot or even Cotto give him a Boxing lesson just not as much as I’d like to see Martinez take back what’s his and expose Chavez to his nut hugging fans as an overprotected paper champ. I too like the fact that De La Hoya is pursuing the fight between Canelo and Chavez because it would be an interesting fight.
