Chavez Jr. Calls out Miguel Cotto

cesar chavez jrIn a recent interview with Univision, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr said he would love to fight Miguel Cotto and he would rather fight Cotto over Canelo Alvarez because Canelo is scared of him.

Personally I don’t think Canelo is afraid of Chavez. I am interested in seeing Chavez vs Cotto. The WBA junior middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto was actually scheduled to fight Chavez last year but Cotto had minor shoulder surgery and was forced to sit out.

Bob Arum, who promotes Chavez, said he will make the fight happen if Cotto agrees to it.

“If Miguel Cotto wants to fight Julio Chavez for the middleweight title – I will get that done but Miguel and his people have to want that so I don’t know,” arum stated.

The reason why Bob Arum doesn’t sound so sure of making the fight is that Miguel Cotto’s contract with Top Rank has expired after his recent win over Antonio Margarito.

At this point, what other options does Cotto have? He can sign with Golden Boy but then again what can Golden Boy offer to bring in a big pay day? Cotto said he wants the big names and the only two big names are Floyd Mayweather, which I highly doubt will happen and the other is a rematch with Manny Pacquiao but then again, who wants to see that again?

The only thing I agree with is that the undefeated WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO’s) believes like I do that the ringside doctor shouldn’t have stopped the fight between Margarito and Cotto and let Cotto win by decision.

Other than that, I don’t believe anything he says. Chavez is known for pulling out of fights and Cotto will probably be the best fighter he will ever face.

Do you think Chavez has a chance with Cotto?

  1. All I’m going to say is Chavez can call out whoever he wants, but will he actually fight him? We all know Chavez pulls out of fights against legit threats. If Cotto accepts will another ceiling fan attack Chavez? Or maybe he’ll happen to come down with a high fever again. My point is if this fight gets set up I won’t buy into it until I see Chavez in the ring. To be honest the only advantages Chavez has is his size, I favor Cotto in speed and technique but power is a toss up to me because Cotto will probably be having to move up in weight for the fight it may affect his power I think he still hits hard at Jr. Middleweight but not the power he had at Welterweight. I think he’ll have enough to get a UD though.

  2. Chavez will never be the half boxer Cotto is stronger, faster, and have more experience by far chavez have 45 fights with how??? This kind of fight will be a copy of Cotto vs Gomez a easy fight easy money is a mistake put a young prospect trowing a carrer to the trash, first win someone with a name not sparings

  3. Please disregard Santos’ comments. Based on other post (and this one) he is ignorant and can’t see clearly, because he probably suffers from vision issues like Margarito and cannot except what is reality. “Cotto isn’t a good fighter”? You are silly and make me laugh. Anyway, I don’t see Chavez Jr. being anywhere close to Cotto’s skills. Yeah, he won against Manfretto, but he didn’t really impress me much. Manfretto was slow and at a higher weight. He didn’t look good at all. Chavez Jr., to me, looks a little uncoordinated at times and sloppy. Don’t get me wrong, he has potential, but he should be focusing on fighters that are in his range, like Alvarez. Totally agree with TJ Boxing and the like.

  4. I think jr is a lil too big for Cotto, jr is looking a lot better but i don’t think he will beat Cotto.
    Cotto UD.

I would sure be excited to see this fight though!

Cotto is a very good fighter.

  5. I totally agree Chavez is younger and hits harder than Cotto ow that kid is good and ready for big fights he has a good chin and punching power Chavez Jr will the fight cotto he don’t have shit and as far as Canelo he don’t have shit

  6. Chavez does have a good chin and is starting to box a little more now than before. I hope Cotto doesn’t agree to fight at 160 lbs though. A fair catch weight is 157 lbs. Cotto would be the hardest puncher Chavez faces if the fight happens. I hope it does. Chavez called him out so why not. Sounds interesting.

  7. Let get this straight Cotto beat Margecheato on SaTurday he beat him to the punch every time ..Cotto didn’t look tired like in the first fight ,give the man the credit he deserves ,he beat Magacheato fair and square …Cotto was winning on all the score cards the only way Margacheato would have won is by knock out and to tell you the truth that wasnt going to happen….Now for Chavez he don’t have shit he has beat any one he hasn’t had a had fight and to be honest he I really not that good …Yes since he has been with Freddy Rouch he has looked better ….but still Cotto would kill him early in the rounds an wouldn’t stand a chance ….and as far as Canelo ,,,,that’s another fight that Chavez is not ready for …now that kid is good and ready for big fights he has a good chin and punching power ,needs to defend him self a little more but other than that he is good ….that would be a good fight for Chavez as well for Canleo…prove who really the best Mexican fight for Mexico ….

  8. Are you Puerto Rican? or just stupid? Miguel Jotto is not a good fighter and he did not do the job with Margarito and one good eye only!!! Cotto should thakns manny for destroying Margarito’s eye and getting that chanse to win!!! Cotto will get destroyed by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.!!! and I hope Jr. gets Miguel Running and hugging Cotto end pops Cotto’s eye out!!!!
Stop writting stupid shit and get your facts straight!! Chavez is younger and hits harder than Cotto!!!!

  9. I totally agree with “I don’t believe anything he says. Chavez is known for pulling out of fights and Cotto will probably be the best fighter he will ever face.”

Let’s be honest, what does Chavez Jr. brings to the table?….. a good chin and his last name, that’s it!
He hasn’t face anybody good at all! NONE! at age 25 his fans and even his trainer say: well he is learning and getting better… Are you kidding me? at age 25 he a fighter is supposed to be at his peak! yes at age 25 you can still learn and get better, but you do that by fighting good apposition.

On the other side Miguel Cotto might not be the same Cotto of 4 years ago, but just looks at his resume, look at his fights, he has tons of experience and skills compared to Chavez Jr.

Jr is a protected fighter, they’ve been using the Chavez last name along with the kid to cash in, and is only up to recently (even he admitted this on his last fight interview) that he actually has started to train well look like a real boxer, but where is the experience? where is the head and body movement, where is the defense? it’s just not there!

Cotto will pick him apart, the only way for Chavez Jr to win that fight is by landing a huge shot on Cotto, (and we all know Cotto doesn’t have the best chin out there) but other than that this will look like a replay of Cotto vs Margarito 2.
Chavez needs lots of work and about 1 or 2 more years actively training, learning and fighting decent opponents, after that he can be put on with the big boys.

And with Jr’s history of pulling out offights, I’ll believe this one is actually happening when I see him inside the ring…
