Who remembers Winky Wright?

I sure do and did enjoy the level of boxing he brought to the sport. Unfortunately, due to outrageous demands and a superstar attitude, Wright has not been active for the majority of two years. In a recent interview, Wright talked about looking for a big fight to get up for. He is not worth the several million that he normally asks for. If he would settle for a few hundred thousand against a top name opponent, I think he would be a TV approved fighter.

Here are some match ups to get up for (or not) our self-benched friend, Winky Wright (weights ranging from 154-168).

1. Sergio Martinez- Although boxing works in mysterious ways, I see Wright being a TV approved opponent for Martinez. Would we really want to see that? Paul Williams dominated Wright, Martinez destroys Williams? Who knows but I think we can all imagine how this fight would turn out.

2. Erislandy Lara- Lara is coming off a competitive win (in my eyes at least) against a top name opponent. Lara-Wright could be another step up fight for this up and coming Cuban star or a career rejuvenating fight for Wright.

3. James Kirkland- In need of a step up fight since reuniting with Ann Wolf, Winky could be the perfect test for this all action pressure fighter.

4. We have seen Winky fight at 170 against Hopkins so I am adding these opponents in at a catch weight of 170. The two opponents would be Jean Pascal and Zsolt Erdei. Both men were supposed to fight each other, but fell through. Winky, who would be the smaller man in each case, has fought bigger guys. Both are interesting, but unlikely.

It would be great to see Winky fight a top contender such as Lara or Kirkland, but who knows with his requests and demands if we will ever see him fight again.

  1. Rob,I agree with your article and I also disagree. Being a close friend and advisor to Winky for almost 15 years I can personally tell you that over pricing himself and or making outrages demands has not happened at all. Richard Schaefer has when on record many times to clarify the same thing. If you have the time i would love to ans any and all questions you might have. I would also like to inform you of what has really gone on and why he hasn’t fought as of yet. 201-218-3038.
