Michael Rosenthal from the RingTv recently announce that Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz are negotiating to fight on April 16 in the U.S., the same night Amir Khan is scheduled to fight in the UK, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said.

Ortiz isn’t Shane Mosley or Manny Pacquiao, two fighters Berto wanted to meet, but the Los Angeles-area fighter is an intriguing opponent for the 147-pounder from Miami.

An obvious issue is weight: Ortiz has been fighting as a junior welterweight (140 pounds). Both Schaefer and Rolando Arellano, Ortiz’s advisor, said they would want a catch weight. Schaefer mentioned 143 or 144.

Schaefer also has no concerns about Ortiz moving up in weight, pointing to his fight against Lamont Peterson on Dec. 11 to make his point.

“When they put Victor on the HBO scale the night of the fight, he weighed 156 pounds,” he said. “I think he’s also taller than Berto. And look at Berto’s last three, four fights. He usually came in at around 145.

What’s your opinion? Is this a good match or a mismatch?

  1. It sounds like decent match up, but I think that Berto will stop Ortiz in the mid to late rounds. Ortiz got beat by Maidana and he is alot slower than Berto. I also think berto is just as powerful as Maidana if not more powerful. So the bottom line in my opinion, Berto will stop Ortiz. If Berto wins I can see him fighting the winner of Pacman vs Mosely. I always thought it would be nice to see Cotto vs Berto. But most of Cottos year is planned out already, asumming Cotto beats Mayorga will then have a rematch with Margarito. So we wont be seeing Cotto vs Berto anytime soon.

  2. this will be a good fight. i got vic winnin by split decision. berto is good but very sloppy. vic is quick and it will cause a problem for berto it will throw him of his game. he gets to frustrated and tends to look for the ref to help as he did in the quintana fight. but overall it will be a good fight. may the best man win

  3. when is berto going to fight someone from his division… i see why he was passed up by pacquiao and his camp to go with mosley… if berto wants pacquiao, this is definitely not a step in the right direction.

  4. Would be an interesting fight I really don’t know who would win but i’d say at the moment Berto by split decision. Unless Ortiz could keep that intensity he usually has at the beginning of fights going the full 12 rounds.
