Today was a good day. Today is my Friday and tomorrow I will be stuffing my face with turkey all day. I’m getting into a routine and learning the fine art of balance, I can multi-task like no other. It was perfect.

Perfect until I received the breaking news that Alfonso Gomez, who was scheduled to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next week, Dec 4th, has pulled out from the fight due to an injury. I stammered, feeling like I’d been punched in the gut, what kind of shit is that?

Alfonso Gomez was forced to pull from the fight today after an MRI detected a ligament tear in his left elbow. So now what, you ask? Taxi driver Pawel Wolak from Mount Arlington, NJ with a record of 27-1, 17KOs will step in.

Update: Cesar Chavez will not fight on Dec 4 eighter. Click here to ready why

Sometimes I think the promoters are behind all this. [emember_protected]Pawel Wolak has always been in the mix, if you recall Chavez Jr. was supposed to fight Wolak as a tune-up fight before taking on Miguel Cotto, but then the fight between Cotto and Chavez was cancelled and was stated that Chavez will fight Wolak in September. Because Wolak is not a house hold name, there was no way they could have marketed the fight. Seriously, who the hell is Pawel Wolak? If some one told you, “hey lets go buy tickets to see Chavez vs Wolak,” your first response will be, “Who the heck is Wolak?”

I don’t think the casual fan has even heard of him. So they use Alfonso Gomez to reel in the fans. Gomez is not brand name like Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather but people might know who Gomez is because of the TV show, The Contender.

So they use his name to promote and hype the fight and a week before the fight, out of no where, Gomez fails an MRI test. that’s no coincidence. If it wasn’t for Humberto Soto and Nonito Donaire, who are part of the undercard, I don’t care if I already had a credential, I wouldn’t have attended.[/emember_protected]

  1. LAXONE hmmmm… Personally, I like Alfonso, hard not to, BUT… I believe that this one is a more interesting fight. The fact that the contracted weight for this fight is 160Lbs gives Chavez a BIG edge even BEFORE the initial bell rings.

Now, if Wolak is Wolak, he will come forward, he will be in Junior’s face, willing to take whatever the youngster has to get in his. On the other hand, Chavez defense has proven to be leaky in the past, which means that this won’t be a “free ride” for Julio because the taxi driver will get in his share of licks also.

This fight will probably tell us more about Chavez Jr. than what many seem to expect. The Duddy fight basically ONLY meant that he he could beat Duddy, as could about 30-40 other 154/160LB’ers. A SOLID win will gain a lot of well needed respect for young Julio… and ALSO for Wolak, right??

  2. ahhh… BTW, I would’ve figured that the Chavez camp would’ve prefered a lesser
risk. But.. then again, he needs a few small NOTICEABLE victories, such as the Duddy win, to get the needed credibility for a major PPV event against someone of the caliber of Angulo, Alvarez or Cotto. I believe that the WBC will soon/eventually “create” a vacancy somewhere and will match him with some sudden “out of the nowhere” mandatory challenger, thus making young Chavez a ‘campeon’ and … MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!

  3. To be honest.. I believe that Wolack would beat Duddy and Gomez, which doesn’t mean all that much. Now, I also believe that Wolack will be a tougher test than Gomez would’ve been. I don’t believe that Chavez/Roach will sleep on Wolack, they can’t afford to. I don’t see young Chavez scoring a kayo, it will go the distance which practically means Chavez will AUTOMATICALLY win. Wolack would have to win at least NINE rounds to get a decision over Cesar Jr, no doubt in my mind.
