Vitali Klitschko punished Shannon Briggs for 12 brutal rounds Saturday to retain his WBC heavyweight title with a unanimous decision.

The Ukrainian champion dominated the action but never knocked down the American challenger, but he did manage to send Brigs to the hospital. Shannon Briggs was rushed to hospital. He was listed in critical condition and is feared to be suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage. Briggs is also undergoing surgery to repair fractures under both of his eyes.

Klitschko connected with several combinations and continued to hit Briggs repeatedly with left – right combinations there is no question Briggs took heavy punishment. Briggs was little more than a punching bag by the 10th, with Klitschko seemingly hitting him at will.

Briggs surprised Klitschko with a clean right in the 11th, but Klitschko replied with two big rights that snapped Briggs head back. At the end the judges scored it 120-107, 120-107 and 120-105 for Klitschko, who improved to 41-2. Briggs dropped to 51-6-1.

Shannon Briggs posted on his Facebook “I came to the hospital strictly as a precautionary measure, and after several tests the Dr.’s concluded that there were no severe head injuries. I am staying in the hospital to further examine an injury to my left bicep that I suffered in the first round.”

“I’ve fought George Foreman, I’ve fought Lennox Lewis, and Vitali’s the best,” Briggs said. “He hits harder than Foreman, he’s got incredibly fast hands.

  1. Tomas Ademek should be given a shot at either Klitschkos. There is no other challenger that can come close to beating them.

David Haye had his shot at both brothers and bitched out.
