Oscar De La Hoya, You’re a Hypocrite!

When the California State Athletic Commission made it clear they don’t want Antonio Margarito to box in their jurisdiction, I was disappointed for the fact that Margarito had paid his dues and his still being denied for the second time after he first applied for a boxing license in Las Vegas. The Nevada State Athletic Commission also made clear their uneasiness with licensing Margarito.

Top Rank, Margarito’s promotional company, is desperately seeking a venue to license Margarito. They have applied in Texas already in hopes he’ll fight Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Bob Arum said Friday that he expects Margarito to be granted a license there next week without a hearing.

Everyone has mixed feelings on whatever Antonio Margarito should be allowed to box ever again and that’s ok but one thing I am not ok with is how a day after the California denial, Oscar De La Hoya called a conference call to talk about Margarito. During the call De La Hoya said he believed Margarito should have been banned for life for tampering with his gloves.

“If anybody in any way tampers with anything having to do with the fists or the gloves, you know what? They should be banned for life,” De La Hoya said. “That’s my stance and that’s my position. There are no ifs, ands or buts, like, ‘Oh, I’ve learned from my mistakes.’ Well, what if you would have killed somebody, so you should fight again because you learned from your mistakes? That’s total nonsense and my stance will always be that. You do not mess with somebody’s life up inside of that ring.”

I respect his opinion as we’re all entitled to one but don’t use this sob story to put your boxer, Juan Manuel Marquez, in the face of the media to try and get a third fight with Pacquiao.

There was no reason for holding a conference call to talk about Margarito. Golden Boy Promotions has noting to do with Margarito. The conference call was basically to say “Hey since Margarito doesn’t have a license maybe Pacquiao should fight our fighter.” That was a low blow from “The Golden Boy”, its like kicking Margarito while he’s on the ground. Bob Arum isn’t stupid, he to sees what De La Hoya is trying to do. Golden Boy still has a piece of Pacquiao and will be entitled to 25 percent of the profits from Pacquiao’s side from the Margarito fight.

“Given that Oscar is saying Margarito should be banned for life, ask him if he’ll accept the profits from the fight,” Arum said. “If he does not, I will guarantee that I will donate the entire amount to charity.”

Talking smack but yet expecting to collect from Pacquiao-Margarito fight. That goes to show you how hypocrite people can be.

  1. Of course Oscar is going to say that, he is a promoter and wants his fighter to fight in the “big fight”
Like it or not, thats what promoters do, from Arum to King.

Besides, quite a few of you on this board were crying the same thing about Margarito when he first got caught.

I was never a big fan of DeLa Hoya, but trust me, if you were in his shoes you would be trying to make a case for your fighter.

Like Jesus A said “Welcome to the shady business of boxing”

  2. He is a piece of shit!… Im pretty sure he rigged the fight with mosley so the referee wouldnt take them apart everytime mosley clinched margo..

  3. Yes he has a fiduciary duty to make his fighter money. So why not let the media and fans know what he and Marquez want. You have to remember that boxing is a business first than a sport and don’t ever forget that. Call him hypocrite but he’s stirring the pot to get a fight that has some public demand. I agree with him. Whatever you have to do to make that money do it.

  4. I agree with what Oscar said. But what was the point of the conference call, just to state his opinion on margarito? If he did that to try and get a pacman-marquez rematch then thats pretty low. You dont kick a man when hes down and to do it for a profit is worse.

Oscar taking money for the fight is just buisness. Bob Arum is a shady old dude and shouldnt try to ride in on a high horse. Arum trying to put together a fight with a guy who isnt even lisenced is just a ploy for him to make money off of all the margarito drama. If you all notice arum likes to pit fighters that are all in his stable, so he makes all the money. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, He shouldnt be such a hypocrite himself.

  5. Apart from being a hyprocrite, ODLH is also a liar. He said Pacquiao’s punches were not strong enough. Yet he saved himself from a sure KO loss to Pacquiao in the 9th round by refusing to continue fighting after the 8th round.

  6. It’s funny to me how Oscar wants one of his fighters to fight Pacquiao. He should not throw Margarito or anyone else under the bus to get his point across. I remember him saying that he knew exactly what Marquez needed to do when Marquez fought Mayweather. Did he learn how after he fought Mayweather himself ? That’s a slap in the face to Freddie Roach who trained him for the Mayweather fight.

Didn’t see that one coming did you ???

Anyway, Margarito will fight Pacquiaao and there is nothing the CSAC can do about it.

  7. I agree, low blow from Oscar, but the CSAC did not say they don’t want him boxing in CA ever, they said they would want him to show them what he will be doing from now until the next year (when he can re-apply for a license) to make sure nothing like that ever happens again, including some sort of written prof or logs for Margarito to show them.

It sounds to me like there is a chance he’ll get a new license, but they don’t want to make it easy for him at all, and it was clear they want to make him an example to others not to try something like that again.

I don’t really agree with all that, they should of thought about that when they revoke his license for 1 year and not 2 years.

  8. Oscar needs to get back in the ring because he has no idea what he is doing outside of the ring. He constantly gets names-weights-facts etc…, mixed up when speaking on the sport, he is a huge hypocrite and frequently talks out of the side of his neck.

He needs to be punched in the mouth by a few different fighters…

Never thought I would talk about my ex-favorite fighter like that. But the last decade he has been very disappointing from a fans point of view.

  9. What I don’t get is, what is Marquez going to do against Manny?
What makes Oscar think anything may be different in they’re next meeting?
Marquez is shot and he should stick to other shot fighters, like Juan Diaz etc.
If Oscar’s agenda is just to get his fighter another big fight, then he is a hypocrite.
By the way, Margarito should be banned for life.
What he and his corner tried to do is unforgivable.
    Sorry.
