Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KOs) remained unbeaten after winning a twelve round unanimous decision over “Ireland’s” John Duddy (29-2, 18 KOs) to claimed the vacant WBC silver middleweight belt on Saturday night in front of more than 10,000 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Chavez dominated the early part of the fight with a steady dose of hooks and jabs, but Duddy kept the pressure on and pushed Chavez to 12 rounds for the first time in his eight-year career.. The Scores was 120-108, 116-112 and 117-111.

“I want to thank Manny Pacquiao who told him to train with Freddie Roach and Alex Ariza (strength and conditioning coach for Pacquiao). Pacquiao said just try it and Chavez didn’t know if he could do it,” stated Bob Arum during the post fight. “The old Chavez would have been killed by Duddy. He would have run out of gas by the 6th round.”

Chavez returned to the place where he watched his father fight to a controversial 12-round draw against Pernell Whitaker in 1993.

“For me, it was a very special thing. A dream come true. When I was a little kid, I didn’t think I would become a star in boxing,” Chavez explained.

On the undercard, Marco Antonio Barrera (66-7) unanimously outpointed Adailton DeJesus (26-5) in a 10-round lightweight fight. Scores were 100-90, 98-92, 99-91.

“Our plan is to get him the light weight championship. Me and Beltran, the goal is (for Barrera) to fight and win the lightweight title,” Arum said. “There is no rush to fight for the title, it’s up to him. There are great fights for him at 135lbs – championship fights.”

“I worked very hard. I felt pretty good,” Barrera stated. “I am ready whenever Bob wants me to fight, I fight. San Antonio is like my home, thank you.“

  1. A fight with Cotto would be interesting but I don’t think he has all the arsenal to beat Miguel. Experience wise, Cotto got the advantage.

  2. He called out Miguel Cotto !! That actually sounds like a good fight. He should work on his head movement though. Duddy landed too many shots to the head. Sort of a crossroads fight for both.

  3. With only 4 weeks to train with Roach, he looked like a real fighter this time, not saying that he can beat Pacquiao or he is ready for the big leagues, but he did look fit and was doing the right things in the ring.

He has talent, maybe not the same talent his dad had but with a good trainer like Roach he can exploit it and do the best he can with what he has, again that kid needs time to keep on working in the gym away from the night clubs, then we’ll see what is he good for.
