It was recently released that the WBO gave their current middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez of Argentina a 48 hour window to decide if he would keep or relinquish his title. Martinez holds the WBO’s title as well as the WBC belt which he ceremoniously took from Kelly Pavlik with a unanimous decision earlier this year. Martinez is also the WBC’s junior 
middleweight champion.
The newly crowned champion is trying to explore his options but rumor is that Winky Wright might be his only option. Martinez promoter, DiBella, told ESPN.com that he and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer are talking about a fall match with Wright, which they would hope to sell to HBO or Showtime.
DiBella said he and Schaefer did not discuss weight for a Wright but Wright (51-5-1, 25 KOs) said he would have to fight at middleweight.
I personally think this would be an unnecessary fight for Martinez. Wright lost to Paul Williams after coming off a two-year layoff in 2009. He also lost to Bernard Hopkins in 2007 and got a draw in 2006 against Jermain Taylor.
I am tired of promoters doing this shit. Top Rank did the same thing with Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey and we all saw what kind of fight that was.
Golden Boy is only giving Wright his retirement check and is not thinking about the boxing fans. I am surprised DiBella is even allowing this.

First off Winky slaughtered Jermaine Taylor, don’t believe it, explain how Jermain has lost 85% of the fights he fought after winky. Secondly Bernard Hopkins lost the fight against Winky, Bernard himself said the fight should’ve been a draw, but that was too defense fighter fighting one another, if anything that fight was boring. Theres a reason why Floyd Mayweather to this day will come with an excuse on not to fight winky, first he said he’ll fight winky for 25 million, the promoters came up with it, than he ups the price to 85million, why? Because he knows he cant beat winky. You look at the list of fighters who declined to fight winky wright. Martinez would benefit from this fight as far as ranking but we all know he doesnt stand a chance against winky. Lets be real with ourselves, facts don’t lie buddy!
Martinez has no other choice right now but hopefully next time he should go fight somebody better than Winky. 🙂
