Vernon-Forrest2Former boxing champion and U.S. Olympian Vernon Forrest “The Viper,” was shot and killed at age 38 last night in northwest Atlanta where he lived.

The incident began at the Chevron gas station on Whitehall Street in Southwest Atlanta when Forrest, stopped to put air in the tires of his Jaguar, said Atlanta Police Detective Lt. Keith Meadows when two males attempted to carjack him

Lt. Keith Meadows told WSB Radio that the boxer had a gun and a brief foot chase and Forrest chased the suspect to an area near McDaniel and Fulton Streets, where the men exchanged gunfire which left the boxing champion shot in the head.

The suspects are described as “two black males driving a red [Chevrolet] Monte Carlo.” Investigators are interviewing witnesses, and no suspect(s) is/are in custody at this time.

Forrest’s girlfriend’s son is said to have been in the car at the time, but is apparently unhurt. The child’s family is coming up from Texas to retrieve him.

It’s suspected that Forrest was shot at least 7 or 8 times with a semi-automatic pistol.

  1. We really don’t know the whole extent of the story, because we where not there. Maybe his gun was registered for protection safety. If I’m mistaken I believe they have gun licenses in the states.
Their was a child in the back seat of the car at the time. Who knows what these hijackers where going too do. If it where me the first thing that I am thinking is protecting the child. Sometime people act on instincts.

  2. Your right, insurance pays , he had no need to go running after them with a gun, very sad.

  3. thats crazy how Vernon chase the guys and started shooting at them. Why is Vernon carrying a gun in the first place. Take the car…your life is more important, you could replace the car not your life.

  4. No way, another champ gone to soon, R.I.P.
But it’s true, all this crap happens everywhere around the glove every day.

  5. It’s a shame it was this talented boxer but this shit happens every day in every part of the world. We as a society need to look in the mirror and take care of our business. It is well past the time for this type of violence to stop.

  6. Was a very talented boxers as well. Could remember him being a fierce fighter that no one as well wanted too fight him when he was just a welter weight, nobody wanted any part of this guy, including all the top fighters in that division.

Its a sad tragedy, With-in a period of 30 days we have Gatti and now Vernon Forest. R.I.P Rest in peace.

He needs too be remember, and well respected as well.
