27 year old Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. has at least one New Year’s resolution he wants to accomplish, to become a world champion again. Since his last fight in October with Roberto Carlos Leyva which he won by a 3rd KO and retired Leyva, Vazquez Jr. has been in training mode.

Come February 4th, Vazquez Jr. will be going toe to toe with #4 Pound-for-Pound Nonito “Filipino-Flash” Donaire Jr.

Vazquez Jr. being young with no amateur background is a natural. We can’t blame him for being a warrior though.

More young fighters for example sons of living legends, need Vazquez’s mentality.

Vazquez Jr. took some time out of his busy schedule to catch up with me on training camp and preparation for February.

Q: How has training camp been? Have there been any changes?

Vazquez Jr.: During training we added a conditioning coach and we also focused on defense. I feel relaxed and focused.

Q: There are people who doubt you in this fight, how does that feel?

Vazquez Jr.: I feel super good. Training gives me personal confidence and I’m the type of boxer that likes to be in the gym at all times staying active. I’m a natural at 122 and Donaire is moving up in weight. It’s going to be a very even and very good fight.

Q: What’s Donaire’s biggest advantage? Yours?

Vazquez Jr.: I think and understand that it can be his speed; however, I also have speed so I’m confident in that sense. This is my natural weight and I also hit hard (have power). It’s not the same to see a 122 pounder on weigh in day and to see a 135 pounder on fight night. In that sense (weight wise) it favors me. I know I’ll resist the power that Donaire will bring that night because I’m stepping in the ring well prepared and I’m going to win.

There are people who say after Donaire’s last fight, he’s no longer credible unless he moves up to 126. There are people who are in doubt and will still compare Vazquez Jr. as the fighter they saw last May when he was defeated by Mexican veteran Jorge “Travieso” Arce. Come February, we could all be surprised since this is boxing, anything can happen!

Vazquez could be viewed as an easy fight but how can we dismiss him like that when Donaire has never fought above 118? Both technically good fighters with great boxing skills. I see this going either way, these two fighters are exciting.

  1. Great training camp scoop! This is most def an interesting matchup on a greaat card by TR.

Aby, keep up the good work!

  2. Ok vasquez speaks a lot about he’s advantage as a natural 122 pounder,
But in the arce fight he was also the natural at that weight.
Not to take anything away from vasquez because I’m also a fellow puerto rican
    Fighter.

I see donaire as a world class fighter and vasquez as a very tuff B class
Fighter. Vasquez has a lot to prove with a loud of pressure that
Can beat him before he even steps in the ring.

But I wish them the both the best of luck! But I have donaire on this one
Great article by the way ABY
