According to reports made to the web portal DominicanosHoy.com, new WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero was an overwhelming favorite against Antonio Pitalua for last Saturday’s night main event of “Lightweight Lighting”. What nobody believed was the fight was only going to last until the 49th second of the second round.

After knocking down Pitalua early in the second round with an off balanced right hook, Valero finished off the night early with a focused barrage of punches that sent his opponent crashing down to the canvas a second time before the referee Andrew Cole had seen enough img_87and decided to waive off the contest.

With the win, Valero is poised to be the best lightweight in the world with only one man standing in between him and the lofty title, Juan Manuel Marquez. A fact that doesn’t escape the Venezuelan Valero.

Or his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.

“This is a guy that has many resources inside the squared circle. He is ready to go againt Manny Pacquiao or Juan Manuel Marquez, this is the birth of a new super star in boxing,” Arum stated joyously after the quick bout.

“I am very proud by my performance and by the words of Mr. Bob Arum.

Now more than ever will I concentrate on my work and my career. This is a win that helps me and sets me up for big fights,” Valero stated.

“I will defend this belt with honor and courage. I am ready for Marquez, Pacquiao and even Hatton but everything is up to my promoter and what they can come up with.”

“I only want the opportunity to show that I am one of the best in the world.”

  1. Valero needs a teacher that will teach him how to fight, chin up in the air, hands low? a big no-no, with that punch if he learns how to fight he might just turn out to be a great fighter, but first he has to learn how to fight.
